No, this isn't a "who do you think will win" post but rather who's style do you prefer. Both of these guys are supremely talented, with top notch amatuer backgrounds. Both are cocky. One has a safety first approach to boxing, even if the entertainment of the fight has to suffer. The other seems more intent on knocking his opponent out, even if his defense has to suffer. Assuming that Gamboa progresses without a hitch and becomes a top 5 fighter, who would you rather pay to watch on PPV?
I dispute that Gamboa's talent is comparable w/Floyd's. Also, let's see what happens if/when Gamboa starts jumpin' around to different weight classes. What will he do to preserve his '0' (if it makes it far enough to worry about). I mean cmon', dude only has 12 pro fights... how can we start comparing him to the greatest pure talent since RJJ?
Gamboas is much more exciting, and for the same reasons he will not have anywhere near the success Floyd has had.
Who really cares if he preserves his "0"? Since when did that become the measuring stick of a fighter's greatness? Sven Ottke was undefeated. From what I've seen it appears that Gamboa has all of the quickness, athleticism, amatuer background and tools to potentially employ the style of Mayweather. Obviously, he isn't doing that right now. All I'm asking is what style do you prefer to watch?
You don't just employ the style of a defensive master, it isn't that simple. He could **** talent for all i care but talent doesn't make an elite fighter, skills do and he obviously doesn't have them defensively.
Gamboa - is upcoming Arturo Gatti. Thats who's style he is going to "employ" when his record will be 20 something fights.
Gamboa has what 11 or 12 fights for **** sake. give the guy some to see if hes really that good or not.
My point was that I dispute some of your assertions. We don't even know that he'll be PPV worthy at any point in his career. At all.
I loved watching Mayweather's clinical, agressive style that he employed in some of his fights (N'Dou, Corrales, Gatti etc.)
Gam....but he's not mayweather and won't be close to filling his shoes. So I guess we should enjoy Gam while he's in the game b/c he will loose and with his style I'm not sure if he'll be able to come back from some brutal KO's I expect to see....but on a good note...there will be some GREAT highlight KO's coming from his hands as well.
I prefered mayweather's style when he was at 130, he lets his hands go more, put his combos together and was less defensively minded, gamboa is great to watch though and i would prefer to watch him over the later mayweather at 47 who though i still enjoyed for the accuracy, defensive skills and ring smarts wasnt as exciting as he was earlier in his career
lol are you all people dumb or what... or you didn't read what he wrote on purpose?! When I first read the title I reacted exactly like you, how is going to compare Gamboa with the greatest boxer of our era... Right now, with Mayweather defensive abilities and Gamboa's style I think Gamboa would land like 5% of punches. But then I read the topic and it is an interesting one, I don't know what the heck you all talking about comparing Gamboa with Mayweather. Gamboa is definately PPV material if, as you said, he keeps doing well. Man it's the second time of his career he headlines an HBO badass show and he only has 12 fights (and that, without counting ESPN)!!!! And don't listen to the commentators, they are on Gamboa's case as they were on Mayweather's. When they say Sergio stole the night, it is true for big boxing fans who didn't know him, but for the average boxing fan who listened to the show, the Gamboa fight is what got their attention. They don't care about some dude dancing around fighting a punching bag who doesn't fight back. They wan't to see spectacular KOs and that's what Gamboa brings to the table. PPV doesnt care at all about what you people who-listen-to-boxing-every-day think. They care about the masses, and masses want to see Gamboa fight.
