: Why is Vitali's long lay-off not so significant in this case?

Because he is fighting a guy named Sam Peter. Why do people act like Vitali has been sitting around eating Bon Bons for 4 years? He has been in and out of the gym. He just had a good training camp which he was not injured.

-It is apparent that he has stayed fit during his time away.
-Regarding his injuries; the rest can only help.
-Vitali appears smart enough to know his limitations. If he thought his body might fail him; he would not return.

This is a very unusual lay-off. Vitali always knew he was going to come back. He stayed fit the entire time both mentally and physically and was in Wladamir's corner for all of his fights. He will pick up right where he left off.

Because this isn't a normal case of laying around for 4 years being inactive. He has still remained in top shape for that time.

I hope to god you know the difference between the two.

good points above. this isn't larry holmes coming back with a couple weeks of camp to face prime tyson (not that vitaly is equal to holmes). u know vitaly will have all the right preparations and he's facing a limited belt holder in a weak era.

It may be significant, maybe not. We'll see.

But he's fighting Sam Peter, not exactly the second coming of Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes, etc...If he was facing a better opponent, then you'd have more people picking against him.

Mostly those (besides the Klit-Lickers) who are still picking Vitali to win, pick it because they think so little of Peter.

Of course it is, along with Peter's peak in physical strength and experience. Vitali is to try to turn the clock back against one opponent that has no recollection of who Vitali is or does. And this is for me the main issue around Peter's favouritism - Vitali has the mental picture of Peter losing to his brother, Peter has the purpose of striking his opponent regardless... Boxing skill may take its place if Peter has no idea or touch how to make the reach and height disadvantage not to play against him, but Vitali has to react and settle down with the high pace he's not used to for quite some time. This is no sparring session!

basically the long layoff is the reason the odds are so close. If Peter beats Vitali, markit down to the layoff. If Vitali beats Peter, mark it down to the gap in ability.

Vitali has been out of combat for 4 years, unlike Foreman who took 4 years fighting his way up the ranks before getting a title shot, Vitali is going right for the man, right out the gate, weak divsion or not, if he wins in my mind he's the best in the division and I will dedicate a thread to him to show why I feel that way.

Peter is not Tyson, but he is a active, very heavy hitting fighter, that does have heart and is willing not just to box, but to fight as well, which will be difference in this fight. Peter will pressure Vitali, and make him feel his first live punch in 4 years, I honestly dont see Vitali taking it well.

    Thanks for those pointers, everyone.

So, there's still a big debate about how significant it is, but still, this wasn't your usual 4 year lay-off.

In other words, as Pharaoh says, we're back to square one. If Vitali wins, he was just better and the lay-off was not your usual lay-off, but if he loses, Peter's still **** but the lay-off was more significant than otherwise imagined. Peter really cannot win, can he? And his belt is on the line too! At least he's making a lot of money out of this fight.

:good yes vitali has not been in the ring for 4 years and he is stepping in with sam, what ever you may think of him he is one of the best in the division and he hits hard, vitali is in for a tough night for sure
