how do you determine which style you should be fighting like? I mean im doing what works with certain guys but i feel like i should pick a certain style and try and improve on it. im 5'9 and about 77kg but have good reach for my height, i also have good head movement with slipping punches and also good power with my punches.
Depends on physique and attributes. What weight do you think you'll be fighting at? Because you are a quite small for a super-middle/light-heavy, and it depends whether you feel you can get down any further without comprising on stamina, speed, punch resistance etc.
well i plan on fighting at 75kg, although i could probably get down to 69kg i think i would be compromising some strength and power. i am only 5'9 but i think i am pretty strong for my size. ive had one fight and the guy i fought fights at 81kg so i think i could fight at 75.
So your gonna be a middleweight at amateur right? To be honest with you, I wouldn't know too much about styles at amateur level. It just seems basically that a good defensive guard and stick-and-move tactics seem to work best. But in terms of a professional style, your gonna be a super-middle. 5'9" is probably a little small, although he say you have good reach, though your reach typically is the same as your heigh in terms of wingspan which is how it's measured. Put it this way. If we're talking about 3 different styles, boxer, brawler, slugger, your gonna need as attributes: Boxer - You would need to be quite rangy, quick on your feet with a good jab and good handspeed. You would also need to be able to keep moving around and sticking with the jab for the full however many rounds, and need to know how to use the ring to your advantage. Brawler - Your gonna need to know how to use the ring to your advantage again, in terms of cutting your opponent off. Good stamina is key, aswell as a decent chin, and accumilative power. A good body attack helps aswell. Slugger - Your gonna need a good chin and preferrably a good basic defence aswell and big power. Your also going to have to have a good understanding off range, keeping in range for that big punch all the time, and timing aswell as you need to know when to throw and land the big punches that matter.
yeah just amateur, like i said i could get down to 69kg if i really wanted to later down the track. but yeah i know what your sought of saying:good
You make it sound kinda black and white man like boxing is really basic. There is many different types of a boxer style fighter look at Winky Wright noboddy is like that guy hes a pressure fighter but hes considered a boxer cause hes very hard to hit and has a fantastic jab but he doesnt move his feet. Compare right to someone like Juan Manuel Marquez another boxer but this man moves a good amount and reallys on alot of combos but with real good technique and precision and variety of course. Pretty much everyone is different. I mean like Shane Mosley what style what you consider that man to be ?
but you need to understand where hes coming from he is generalizing the basic styles winky wright is great cause he aquired his own style no one showed him how to box like that he aquired that style himself like many other boxers the same
Ok, don't impose any idea of what style you think you should be on your training. It will end up being detrimental. Just train, develop, and your natural skills will be highlighted. At that point you can categorize yourself, as you will have some information derived from reality to work with. It's like with a scientific theory: one shouldn't develop some preconception of how the reality will be, or they will limit their perception and experience, resulting in an inaccurate answer. One should observe things through experience and extract things from that. So, just let it develop naturally.
