Robin Reid - Just Short Of Greatness?

Still i have never seen the Calzage one, seriously need to jusdge that

 

I don't mean to be a curmudgeon but i never thought much of him.

A fairly average lazy fighter with a decent generic jab right hand style.

He never struck me as being an intelligent fighter at all.

That Calzaghe struggled so much with him is a black mark against Joe imo.

one of the fights that makes me think Joe is really lucky Dean Francis ****ed up his shoulder.

 

I remember watching the Ottke fight and at one point, I swear, the referee actually cautioned Reid for hitting Sven. . . . not illegally mind. . . just for having the audacity to punch Ottke in the sanctified air of his homeland. Possibly the most bias refereeing job I've ever witnessed.

To answer your initial question. No. I would never consider Reid to be anywhere near "great". Nor do I consider Ottke or Calzaghe "great" either. Both were protected fighters IMO.

 

Reid was durable though. You described him quite aptly at points throughout that post Mantequilla. He was tough and seemed game, decent power, but never had that extra thing to propell him to greatness imo, wasnt ever gunna happen that next step. Seemed stiff at times, especially when he got over the hill, lost the hart when it got to that point, the hart for a gruelling one wasnt there anymore, i dont know if he ever had that aspect of him truly the way a Duran(example) did, it was just more he was young and up for a tear-up when he was young

 

I saw that incident about the ref in the Ottke fight, it happened! When i heard about it i had to see it, was a bit of an anti-climax though as i'd heard it wos the most hilarious thing ever!

 

I'd be interested in what everyone else thinks Of Francis actually.

as a boxer-puncher i think he may have been the most well-rounded Britain produced since Conteh.A massive waste of talent.

 

He was a mean man aswell!

 

Robin Reid wasnt a great fighter, he was a solid good fighter, deserved the win over Otke, but that doesnt make him great. Calazage fight was a toss up, I forget my score, but didnt Calazage bust his hand up anyway?

 

Francis was brilliant in the late nineties. Never really lost a legitimate fight.

 

Reid was a bore. I've seen statues possess more mobility.

 

Reid was way off being great but he was a decent world class fighter for a number of years.

 

He was a good fighter but fell considerably short of greatness ,IMO.

 

Just short of Greatness?

Reid and Greatness should not be in the same country, let alone sentence.

For Great to mean something, there should be no more than 30 or so great fighters in the history of the sport.
