Better over all puncher: Jeffries or Frazier?

I'd say Frazier.

 

It's difficult to say, particularly with virtually no quality film of a prime Jeffries. Neither one was a very fast starter, both generally relying on wearing their opponents down. Both of them were murderous body punchers, and both were reliant mainly on their left hooks to produce knockouts. It is worth noting that Jeffries never beat an opponent over 200 pounds, while Frazier did stop some big men- though obviously Joe was given far more opportunities, so this is merely an area where he is more proven as opposed to clearly superior. Per their boxrec records, Frazier has the higher knockout percentage, but it is further worth pointing out that about two thirds of Jeffries' listed fights are against "name" fighters, while Frazier has a relatively substantial amount of knockout-padding (as compared with Jeffries) with his first 11 fights. My impression is that Frazier was quite a bit busier and more dynamic, but Jeffries may have hit harder with a single shot. I'd give the edge to Joe, but this could easily be seen either way.

 

been awhile since i ventured to the old timers fourm..i love it over here but i would say frazier just b/c i have a lack of evidence on jeffries

 

Fraziers left hook was a lethal one punch shot. Jeffries fought super middles and lightheavyweights most of his career and had trouble putting them away.

 

I agree that Frazier was busier. If you think Jeffries had the harder single shot, then you think he hit harder than Frazier.

Jeffries was more of a two fisted puncher to the head or body.

 

Well, Frazier´s left was better than Jeffries but Jeffries right was even better than Frazier´s so I think Jeffries was more of a two handed fighter than Frazier making him the better puncher overall.

 

Jeffries was allot bigger than his opponent but took along time to put away 36yo LHW Fitzsimmons and others. I picture Jeffries as wearing his opponent out with his strength and endurance.

Frazier was very dynamic and there arent many shots in history as crisp as that left hook, which was a brutal shot and Frazier has his share of brutal KO's

 

From what I understand, in his prime, Jeffries had an amazing left, no big shock, since like Frazier, he was a converted southpaw.

Frazier's left hook of course, is legendary and one of the hardest punches in the history of boxing.

Can't really say, to be honest.

 

I wouldn't call either of them Super punchers. Jeffries best wins were over Corbett x2, 37 years old 27lbs lighter,and 33 years old 30lbs lighter and inactive for 2 years.It took him 33 rds to get rid of Corbett in those fights.Fitz x2,36 years old inactive for 2 years and 39 lbs lighter,39 years old 47 lbs lighter,he went 19 rds in 2 fights.Ruhlin quit standing upright against the ropes claiming a foul.Goddard was tkod,Griffin,[if it took place] was tkod.Everett was tkod.Even the shell of Jackson was tkod.I dont see explosive power in evidence here.Fraziers best stoppages were,Ellis x2 ,1 retired on stool,1 tkod.Ramos quit given as tko,Mathis tko,Machen tko,Quarry x2 Both tkos,Chuvalo tko.The only class fighter he knocked out was Bob Foster who was a LH and21lbs lighter all the others were stopped on their feet or in Ellis case the first time seated on his stool.Frazier was a volume puncher who wore you down,with incessant pressure and a very high punch rate.Jeffries best stoppage wins ,were over men who would rank as LHs today ,so he is unproven at top level as a puncher ,imo.

Perfect thrown left hook to the body and to the head.

 

You also have to take into account the fact that Jeffries wore smaller gloves than Frazier, which might distort his punching power a bit.

 

It is a dificult comparison because they are so different.

Both had a good left hook with Fraziers being the faster and more busy of the two.

Frazier is the epitome of the swarmer while Jeffries is perhaps more a boxer puncher and although he used pressure he often opted to outbox his oponents.

Jeffries was more versatile both stylistical and as a puncher. He seems to have developed into more of a counterpuncher later in his career.

It should also be noted that Jeffries once switched to a southpaw stance when his left arm was broken so that he could continue to use his jab.

 

The KO% of each is very close. But of Jefferies wins 50% of them were against future Hall of Famers with very good chins-that would seem to make the case for me.

 

It's very hard to get and accurate read on Jim Jeffries power due to poor film footage....... But, J.J. was huge for a fighter from 1900.... Jim weighed a solid and stocky 222 pounds and owned thick legs to support his build.... I'd give Jeffries the edge over Joe Frazier in power, strength, and in an overall fight......
