Abraham on Pavlik's loss

I think the Middleweight division has been grossly over-rated. All power, no sweet science. Neither of the two guys impress me all that much. Despite his quick rematch KO over Miranda, AA's all shell defense and no crisp footwork or head movement, and it doesn't really erase what Miranda was able to do to him the first fight. I don't think it really matters who wins the fight AA and Pavlik. There will still be question marks afterwards.

I think the far more talented and interesting division is 168. If the Marquez bros can land on the p4p list despite losses, then I think Kessler should be at least be on the cusp of the top ten despite his loss against Calzaghe. He did a hell of lot better against him than Hopkins did. Then you have potential like Bute and Froch and perenial contenders like Allen Green, Mundine, and Bika. The big brute that is Librado Andrade to act as a gatekeeper. The sideshow that is Lacy v Taylor. And the X Factor which is Andre Dirrell, who probably has more potential than any of those guys I just mentioned.

Aside from Lacy, Taylor and Andrade, I think Pavlik or Abraham would have more than their hands full dealing with anyone on that list.

Of course Abraham doesn't have the footwork, head movement nor is he a master at the sweet science and all that, but he don't need it with defense, power and a chin like he's got.. Look at Pacquiao and Margarito.. Not a a lot skills, but look where they are.. The only disadvantage I see for him at 168 is his size.. I could maybe see him getting outboxed, but I can also see him KO'ing anyone at 168.. I'd favor Abraham over Kessler quicker than I would Pavlik over Kessler.. But on a mental note, I don't think Abraham is moving to 168 anytime soon..

 

Pacquiao has developed into quite the virtuoso. He gets better everytime I see him. To compare his style to that of Margarito, who has underrated defense but is the proto-typical come forward tough as nails fighter, seems like apples and oranges to me. AA and Pavlik are what they are. When they come up againse elite boxer they will lose everytime, despite their power. I would favor Kessler over anyone at 160, 168, and 175 with the exception of Joe Calzaghe. Quite underrated IMO.

 

The Pavlik vs. Hopkins fight was a joke with no impact of Pavlik's future, re:

I've been a lurker on this site and enjoy reading all the comments. I respect divergent opinions. Nevetheless, I admit I'm confused about today's state of boxing vs. years ago. Case in point is the recent Pavlik vs. Hopkins fight.

First, I believe Pavlik was outboxed by Hopkins. But, what did Pavlik lose ? A perfect record, which few fighters achieve. He did not fight for his middleweight belt or a title fight. He did put lots of money in his bank account, and at 4 to 1 odds, if I was a betting man, I may have betted against myself.

Second, these catchweight fights are similar to wrestling matches. Here, Pavlik moves up two weight classes from middleweight to Lt Heavy weight for a non-title fight ? He never fought at that weight before, I think ? What happened to tune up fights and fighting up through the ranks in a certain weight class ?

Third, if Hopkins was fighting for the middleweight belt, I think the Pavik performance factor may have been different.

Fourth, De La Hoya was stopped by Hopkins, yet the naysayers have little problem paying to see him fight PacMan or other ridiculous bouts that again are non-title fights. And, no one says De La Hoya was exposed or a bum when he had to stop fighting due to a body shot by Hopkins.

Finally, these professional fighters are at such a higher level that it is not beyond reason to make these fights sparring matches or a day at the gym for them. They can hedge on output, hold back on knockouts, and do just about anything to let you think it was a true fight. It is snake oil and smoke and mirrors with suckers paying to see these stupid fights.

So, this fight sustains Hopkins as an aging fighter who can fight Jones or Calzaghe (sic) again for more money. It sustains these guys for a few more years. If they were such greats why not fight for the middleweight belt or a championship bout ?

I can see no gain for Pavik for taking this fight other than a big pay day and being assured of future fights by the match makers.

I also think that Pavik will be back and clean up the middle weight division. He is young, hits hard, and needs a few adjustments.

These are solely my own personal opinions.

AA has a great fighter mentality and is a true warrior. I will be rooting for Pavlik of course, but respect to AA.

Not really because I think Hopkin's style is a nightmare for punchers. Hopkins should try to get the Calzaghe-Jones winner, Chad Dawson, or maybe make his heavyweight campaign. I just feel B-hop would do the same against AA as he did to Pavlik. The best AA could do is win a few rounds. Sorry, I don't want to see it.

 

Abraham still has to get by Marquez... the old veteran will pull off The Upset... Remeber where you heard it first!!!!!!

Abraham is now questioning Pavlik's courage, as a boxer he should know better. Beat Marquez first and then go after Pavlik.

 

This fight should happen.

 

What makes you think it would be easy? Interested in your reasons.

For me I think it'd be a very hard fight... Abraham doesn't leave himself open, seemingly solid chin and has a lot of power at middleweight.
