Calzaghe-Kessler re-visited closer than people think

    Don't laugh.
    He was on the boxrec forum posting links from people who thought Kessler won or it was a draw.

    Anyway, it was a close fought fight, but Calzaghe won it for mine by something like 116-112.

    I was going for Kessler and watched it at a pub in Sydney and the commentary was drained out by the pub noise, so there was no bias involved that would suggest I'd be inclined to lean more towards Calzaghe.

    From what I remember of the fight I think I scored it as follows

    1- Even 10-10

    2- Kessler 19-20

    3- Calaghe 29-29

    4- Kessler 38-39

    5- Calzaghe 48-48

    6- Calzaghe 58-57

    7- Kessler 67-67

    8- Calzaghe 77-76

    9- Calzaghe 87-86

    10- Calzaghe 97-95

    11- Calzaghe 107-104

    12- Kessler 117-114


    Calzaghe winning by 3 rounds although I think that the rounds Kessler won were by a cleaner margin.

    When I score fights I look at:

    - Ring generalship
    - A rbr judgement of the total punches landed
    - More importantly (at least I think) punches, combos or any legal action that is hurtfull and makes a difference.

    Then after each round I sum up and give the round to the fighter who has displayed the above more than the other fighter.



    Is this way off? Please enlighten me.

    can see why you scored two rounds even.Their were alot of close rouns in Calzaghe-Kessler.

    good post.Round 5 could easily have gone to Kessler I don't know why people say that was a clear Calzaghe round.

    In the history of the weight class, are there more than 5 guys you'd pick to beat Kessler? There aren't for me. Calzaghe, Jones, Toney, maybe Benn and maybe prime McClellan beat him. That's pretty close to elite.

    Great fight, had a bit of everything - for me Calzaghe's best performance. Better than Lacy because he had a much better opponent who didn't give up.

    Toney was inconsistent sometimes(tiberi,Johnson).I give Kessler at least a fifty percent chance against Toney and Mcclellan and I'd say he would probably beat Benn.

    :patsch Nope, meant to score that 10-9 Kessler. Final result 116-114 Calzaghe. 2 round wining margin. Apologies.

    I agree Kessler kept trying until the very end as evidenced by his twelfth round performance.I disagree that it is his best performance.Jeff Lacy is still the defining performance of Calzaghe's career, even though Hopkins and Kessler were better fighters.

    I'd pick Jones, Calzaghe, Toney and Eubank to beat him. Benn, McClelland would have a decent chance but i'd favour Kessler.

    as kessler said, calzaghe is a great fighter the best he faought and the best he fighter he faught. He was surprised how good he actually was compared to watching tapes. Kessler also said he has a great chin, the uppercut he gave he expected him to fall/buckle but he never finched -that surprised and discouraged/confused him.
