My thoughts go pretty much hand in hand with everyone else's. Ward was a tough guy with a lot of heart, but aside from a cracking left hook to the body he was a pretty skill-less fighter. Not that Margarito would exploit his technical weaknesses, but he's just too big, too strong, and too powerful for Ward, who'd have nothing to keep him off with all night. Not that the night would last very long.
sup Bazooka :good He can go the distance.... that was a badly badly worn Ward, i dont see why we are throwing a Micky Ward in the last three fights of his life in this discussion (just think about how much wear and tear ward has had) he walked through judahs punches fairly easily earlier in his career, gatti hit him with everything but the kitchen sink in their first fight to no avail... its not a suprise that the second time around he went down (also to wards credit, that punch broke his ear drum or some crazy ****, which is why he didnt have any equalibrium... those are rare punches), and being down once in 30 rounds against a puncher like Gatti at the end of your career isnt as bad as it seems. Micky Ward can very well go the distance with Margarito
Freaking Lujan went 10 rounds with Margarito but Ward is getting done in early???? hardly.... he loses every round, and has a chance of being stopped, but Wards chin and toughness are being vastly underated IMO just imo
How? He'd be doing nothing but taking a severe beating all night long from a bigger, stronger, more powerful fighter who could walk through everything he throws. Even if he weren't completely obliterated and out cold, the ref or his corner would likely stop the fight by the mid rounds from the beating he'd be taking.
Lujan is an inch shorter then ward and was taking enough punches to rip his ear apart, yet hes going to last 5-6 more rounds then ward? hey i mean, all i can say is i think Ward can go the distance with Margarito.... i know im in the minority, but i just think Ward is too tough, too good chin, to count him out of going the distance. Could i see a corner stoppage in the later rounds? ya.. but all this early stoppage stuff is ridicoulas IMO though i admit i can understand why people think that stance is crazy... Margarito usually always is a slow starter, if its a 10 round fight, id bet that Ward sees the final bell, loses every minute... but sees the final bell. If the corner stopped it before then... i wouldnt be suprised. I think people are underating Wards mentality, he would do everything and anything to not get stopped, he was hardly EVER hurt... and its not like he never fought any punchers (Judahs power is underated) As for Margarito wearing him down... of course it will happen, i just dont think it will be enough or in time to have the ref stop the fight before 10. just imo... and believe me i can see that its probably not the best stance to have but i just think its a bit much to say a guy whos rarely ever down or hurt is getting stopped early by the slow, slow starting margarito.... i would not rule out a later round stoppage, but id bet on Wards heart and grit to see him through.
you know... my kneejerk reaction to this is that Ward would get absolutely crushed, but after thinking about it for a second: Ward had the best left hook to the body I've ever seen in boxing. Everything else about him was maybe only average or a little above, but that left hook was a thing of beauty and could unman ANYONE he touched with it. If Marg really opened up on Mickey and left himself for a couple of those shots, I bet it would bring him down.
Also I think a prime and motivated Emmanuel Augustus could go the distance and give Marg some cutie problems, and Augustus and Ward was a war. I think Ward is a little bit better than we usually give him credit for and like I said, NOBODY could take that body shot of his. This fight might turn out to be more interesting than it appears at first glance.
Lujan was also stopped, Mickey can be hurt and has been hurt, your right the last three fights with Ward shouldnt be the messuring stick but I can tell you from a size standpoint Tony is just to much for Micky and has a much higher work rate than Mickey has. I just dont see Mickey going the distance I see this as a short fight probably six rounder.
