Busy night for boxing this Saturday - Pick your winners!

Well, it's November 1st actually, but that Saturday offers more than a few barrels of gunpowder - in fact, it's BY FAR the busiest day of boxing in 2008. So cut the chase, down to the fights.



Oberhausen, Germany

Felix Sturm vs. Sebasitan Sylvester, WBA MW title
Simply the biggest fight in Germany in years (not counting the Klitschkos). Fading Felix vs. much smaller, but seemingly on top Sebasitan Slyvester, who’s coming from a KOTY stoppage of Javier Castillejo. This is the Hatton-Witter of Germany. Fight is [A-]

Sergiy Dzinziruk vs. Joel Julio, WBO LMW title
The guy who beat Daniel Santos VERY convincingly is seemingly getting past it. That makes underrated Julio a pretty solid threat to his title. At least Joel’s pressure style and Sergiy’s response in crisp counters will produce an entertaining fight. At most an upset in a hard hitting fight. [B+]



Aguascalientes, Mexico

Fernando Montiel vs. Juan Alberto Rosas, WBO SFlyW title
Under the radar fight, Rosas lost a couple of fights vs. up and comers, but possesses a very decent punch, also has a V over Omar Nino. Should be a good one while it lasts. [B-]



Carson, California, USA

Cristian Mijares vs. Vic Darchinyan, WBC, WBA, IBF SFW titles
This is THE fight to watch late 2008. Awkward puncher vs. slick and skilled counter-puncher. Don’t count out Vic just yet, he’ll put up a fight and bring the best out of the P4Per in Cristian. [A+]

Andre Dirrell vs. Victor Oganov
Young SMW hope Dirrell, getting back on track after the Curtis Stevens snoozer, fights 100% KO perentage Victor Oganov (although that 100% is 28-1 in his record). Both guys are big punchers with areas the other can build a winnable game plan on. Should be fun while it lasts. [B+]



Las Vegas, Navada, USA

Nonito Donaire vs. Moruti Mthalane, IBF FlyW title
We should be very happy to see Donaire, the best FlyW getting back to work. Mandatory challenger Mthalane beat Hussein Hussein the last time and might give a tough one to Nonito who was unfortunately out for too long.

Jorge Arce vs. Isidro Garcia, interim WBA SFlyW title
Not exactly the brawl of the planet, but have you ever seen a dull fight from Jorge Arce? Garcia is former FlyW champ just as Arce, we’ll see if he can make it competitive or it will be a one man show. [C+]

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Matt Vanda II
The rematch of the tough fight Chavez Jr. was in a few months ago and made Mexican fans turn against him. Jr. might not even make it to the world championship level, but he does have a huge heart, and exciting style and serious defensive problems to expect fun fights C+ level and above. That said, it’s a great fight on paper, a fight doesn’t have to belong into the A+ fighters’ group to be exciting, and it will be exciting. This is a career defining fight. A loss could mean the end of Jr.’s pro run, at least that’s what he said.



Well, that’s it. Pretty amazing night for a hardcore fan. I’d like to add that there are a few under the radar fights as well and Daniel Ponce De Leon’s comeback, Marcos Rene Maidana’s, Vanes Martirosyan’s, Lamont Peterson’s and Aaron Pryor Jr.’s next fight, also Matt Korobov’s pro debut, a guy we should REALLY follow from the first fight.

 

Finally... I mean the best are out for the most time... Donaire, Linares, Winky, all great fighters having problems getting a notable fight...
