Greatest Fights By Weight Class

Some very good picks in there. I particularly agree with MAB-EM, Chacon-Limon and Corrales-Castillo. I'd say Gatti-Ward 1 should take 140, despite it being at a catchweight from memory? I think Leonard-Duran 1 MUST take the cake, because it's close to the best fight in history. Certainly better than Margarito-Cotto. I also thought DLH-Vargas was better than Tito-Vargas, but I know there are better fights at that weight, I'm just having a mind-blank.

 

Off the top of my head for Bantamweight, Jofre-Medal I.

Recently, R. Marquez-Tim Austin was a nice slugfest as well at 118lbs.

in my point of view Duran vs Leonard 1 was much much better tahn Cotto vs Margo

 

Corrales-Castillo I is my all-time #1 fight. It's a little hard to compare to fights that I didn't see live (Saad-M. Johnson 1, Limon-Chacon 4, Ali-Frazier 3, etc...) since I already knew ahead of time watching it, who won fights like those.

Ali-Frazier 3 is my #2. I'm not sure what I like better: Saad-M. Johnson 1 or Moore-Durelle 1. That would probably be #3. I know that bladerunner disagrees with me on the Saad-M. Johnson fights, as he likes the rematch better. I liked the rematch, but not as much as I liked the first fight.

One fight which I want to see is the first Arnold Taylor-Romeo Anaya fight (I think they fought twice). That was chosen by Ring magazine as the greatest bantamweight fight ever.

Do you know if it was filmed?

 

I have Leonard-Hears 1 as my top WW fight, but the other two mentioned here would round out my top 3. Leonard-Hearns 1 was pure fistic glory at such a high level. Same with the other two, that's just my preference.

 

The lack of consistent action prevents Leonard-Hearns I from being higher on my list. But this fight might be one of the best cases where seeing it live makes a big difference.

I'm rarely bored when watching a fight live, since there's the suspense factor, even if the action isn't that good. Leonard-Hearns I was such a big fight fought at such a high skill level with drama and shifts in momentum.

 

Nice call, but unfortunately for me, I have the problem of Corralles-Castillo I that you have with those others, I never saw it live, so I knew the dramatic comeback knockout before I saw it. Great fight nonetheless, but I can't imagine what it would have been like watching that thing life.

All good calls. My personal favorite fight ever is probably Chacon-Limon IV or Chacon-Boza Edwards II.

I've heard a lot about this fight too, but have never seen it. I don't know for sure, but there are probably a few clips/highlights of the bout that exist. You should probably make a thread in the Classic forum asking about the fight, because I'm sure if any film exists one of the Classic forum posters probably has it in their collection.

 

You need to re-watch Leonard/Duran I. There was a lot of clinching, but unlike other bouts where a lot of clinching is involved, there was a lot of work being done in the clinches, namely by Duran, who's display of in-fighting that night was the best I've ever seen.

 

yea leonard-hearns1 is my welterweight #1 nd i think 2nd fight as a case at super middleweight and how can you not mention gomez-sanchez at featherweight

 

Because Gomez-Sanchez was a one-sided ass kicking.

Great fights should be close, or least pretty competitive.

 

At SMW Eubank-Watson 2 is as exciting, if not more so than Benn-McClellan, just a shame both had tragic outcomes....
