I think people accuse fighters of quitting far too much on these boards.

These guys who train like madmen for months for a fight, remaining disciplined and focussed aren't going to 'quit' unless they're really hurting.

It's funny how a board of internet warriors can accuse them of quitting - do these clowns never stop to think that the fighter who 'quits' is losing FAR more pride from the act itself than what any bunch of idiots on an internet forum can say about them?

Anyway, I still respect Cotto, I just think Margo has his number and he retired because he couldn't continue.

He looked sick in there, and he tried to keep going for as long as he could.

:good yaup!!!...Anyways, if anything, i got much more respect for cotto after his fight with margarito. It was a tough fight that not many(anybody really) wanted to take. He went in, decisively won the first half of the fight, gave it his all but the better man that night happened to be margarito. Theres NO shame in that. He may not have won the fight but he did earn the respect of REAL boxing fans in my opinion.

I don't have any respect for those "I'm all tough behind my computer screen" guys who called him a coward because of that. Choosing to not continue under those circumstances is completely understandable and the sanest choice imo. The guy had taken TONS of hard punches, was a bloody mess and obviously he didn't have the strength to put up a competitive fight from that point on.

I still think he's a great fighter but all his flaws were exploited by Margo and he set up future gamplans for fighters to use against him in the future.

Since i saw Cotto fight, he's been my number 1 fav fighter, and that Margo-fight just raised his stocks with me. He took such a huge beating for many rounds, and at the point when Cotto went on his knee he didn'n think about pride or money, just surviving that fight alive. Most of the people who say Cotto's a quitter or that he has no heart, would have gone on their knees against Margo within a minute of the first round.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but I'm just curiouse as to what future gameplans is this you speak of JR? Is there really another fighter at 147 that can duplicate what Margarito did against Cotto....Other then say Margarito...How many other fighters can really take flush shots to the chin and head like that :huh :?

There was a reason Margarito was still wearing Blue Blocker Shades days after the Cotto fight....Not many can duplicate his Rocky gameplan with much success at 147, and to answer the thread starters question. I still have tremendouse respect for Cotto and even more so after fighting and losing to Margarito. In order to reach Greatness you have to be willing to take on the best and challenge yourself. Cotto did that and you know what....When you do that there's a chance you might lose, but how do you dare to be great? Without really testing and challenging yourself against the best competetion around.

I still think Cotto can beat Margarito, and we'll soon find out in the rematch next year...Hey and if we're lucky as boxing fans maybe we can be treated to the 147 WW version of Izzy vs Marquez.....Nobody thought Izzy vs Marquez would turn out in the end to be what it was and that was an EPIC ****ing trilogy. Remember Izzy so called quit in their first meeting too...:yep

    Not many? I'd say none.

Anyway, I think that is a line often people use when a fighter loses badly (i.e. many use it for Pavlik after the Bernard fight). But one has to consider that not all fighters can exploit another fighter's weaknesses.

Yes, there are others at 147 who could duplicate what AM did. Floyd(retired) Williams, Berto and Clottey. The old adage is "once exposed, always exposed". This old adage never rings true with the greats. It happens to guys who turned out "not" to be best. Donald Curry is a perfect example of once exposed, always exposed. Once McCallum landed that hook, Curry was never the same. It is a wait and see for Cotto.

I thought Izzy had a bad injury to his nose so I didn't think he quit. I looked forward to the rematch because somehow I knew he would beat Marquez, and he did. The thing is in the third fight, that fight was so close, and yet so many didn't think it was close. If you look at Izzy's face after the last fight and days after, he looked like he was in a car accident. I thought Marquez won a close fight, and I never liked Raf Marquez's skills as a fighter. I respect them now.

I doubt it. "Duplicate" means to follow the same or about the same strategy.
Margo's strategy was to come forward and pressure no matter what the other guy threw.
None of the guys you mentioned could just walk through the punches landed by Cotto in that fight except maybe for Clottey.

I still say..Cotto is the man....May have gotten whoooped by Tony, but he gave it everything..and don't bet your house on Miguel losing the rematch either...Cotto was never one of my favourites...but you can't deny the man's heart, skill and accomplishments..

Hope his head is still straight...You never know after that kind of a beatdown.
