As soon as I made this comment the other day, I thought to myself, well there is Cristian Mijares, who is a good, solid technician southpaw, maybe he approximates a Stevie Johnston. I think we saw tonight that he doesn't have anything near the mental strength Stevie possessed. Unfortunately, there are no more Stevie Johnstons in boxing.
True. I overrated the hell out of Mijares based on his skills, but you just can't judge a fighter until they've been proven in every aspect, and Mijares's mental capacity was proven tonight to lag behind his technical ability.
It will be interesting to see what he goes on to do from here. He's still young enough to learn from it, if learning is part of his make up, of course. He carried almost Zab Judah like arrogance (before Tszyu danced him up) into this fight. I wonder if he will turn out to be another waste of talent like Zab was, or if he will transcend it to something better. Time will tell.
