Calzaghe's resume is usually under-rated on this forum. However, even if he beats Jones, Roy's resume would still be superior to Joe's in overall terms.
Weight draining is a cop out and i'm sick of people using that as a way to discredit another fighter's win. If you're having problems making weight and don't think you can win then pull out like Guzman did but if you show up to fight and lose it's not an excuse.
I can't believe this is even a question... After Calzaghe beat Eubank in 1997, he spent 9 years doing nothing but defending his WBO belt against largely irrelevant minimal contenders, until fighting Lacy in 2006. Calzaghe's biggest wins are against: a 43 year old Hopkins Kessler, who in over 40 fights really has not fought another great fighter other than Calzaghe Lacy, who was completely overrated, and has no big wins on his resume Eubank, who was nearly retired Now, he's fighting a shot legend in RJJ. Give me a break. RJJ won titles in 4 divisions, beat 2 HOF/ATG fighters in their primes (or at least at a young age), beat numerous world champions, wiped out the LHW division, was the first man in a century to win the middle and heavyweight title, and barely lost a round for a decade... This thread is a joke...
If weight draining is a cop out there goes Glass Jaw Roy's excuse for getting KOed twice. Thanks for settling that for us. :good
Yep, Toney struggling to maintain a weight that he fought at 4 months earlier is the exact same situtaion as Jones burning off over 20lbs of pure muscle. atsch
He has been the greatest fighter since Pernell Whitaker, the greatest of this generation, is a bona fide ATG, and a top 20 of all-time pound-for-pound master. And you have a tiny head.
Rico does have a point. First off, all the weight Roy lost wasn't pure muscle. That's impossible. Second, the effects of weight draining were at its worse in the first fight with Tarver, and Roy won that fight. The second fight with Tarver was over a year after the Ruiz fight. The weight loss is not why he lost that fight.
It depends on how you view the first Tarver fight. I thought Roy was awful other than about 2 rounds. He was unrecognizable from the guy who beat Woods and Kelly a year or so before. Tarver obviously went into the fight in the mindset that he was facing an invincible great who had just beaten a heavyweight champion. He only realized during it that this wasn't the real Jones. Had he been confident enough to go for a KO that time, he'd probably have won then as well.
Coming from a guy that says Calzaghe clearly has the better resumeatsch :-( Markus you and Rico fail horribly every goddamn day on here:deal The both of you should join the Boxrec forum:yep
I couldn't agree more. The fact is Hopkins was already 27 years old and Roy was 24. Hopkins was the number one ranked fighter and Jones was ranked second. The fight was not action packed, but featured two supremely talented and intelligent tacticians fighting at their peaks in their first title fights. The BHop in that fight would have beat almost any other fighter on the planet...problem was he had RJJ in front of him.
His legacy has been enhanced. Perhaps his biggest win was his upset over Jirov. Look at what he did to Holyfield. He competed with guys much bigger than he is and looked tough. All of this from a former middleweight!
