yep. like someone said i think strong neck muscles and bone density might fare better in taking a shot. just look at iron mike. he's basically a neck with legs and arms sticking out and he took massive shots before going down. maybe a strong jaw put into the formula? punched on the ears can mess with someone's equilibrium, but not necessarily hurt them, just pop your eardrums and bleed alittle. Gerardo Gonzales, aka Kid Gavilan, fought SRR several times as well as other great welters and never put down, but he didn't seem to have a very muscular frame or jaw. on the other hand, you look at william joppy, classic boxer face with thick eyebrow and high cheek bones, yet he was dropped several times, tho it was vs. an elite welter in tito and atg b-hop.

Without wanting to get into any form of Racial stereotyping.... I read somewhere about different skull thicknesses in various races....

The premise being that a slightly thicker skull provided some extra protection for the boxer....

In proportion to his body it's quite small.

I know this is going to sound bad but I think the more intelligent you are the less well you can take a shot.

David Haye and RJJ are two examples of really intelligent spoken fighters who are very measured when they can talk but have questionable punch resistance.

Lennox Lewis would be another example (though not strictly speaking China-chinned).

Khan in his interviews seems fairly intelligent; and there's a chin made of bone-plate China.

Vladimir Klitschko thinks the thickness of the skull helps absorb the impact of a punch, and he has a PHD in Sport Science. Emmanuel Steward beileives this as well.

I remember Joe Rogan mentioning that Mirko Cro Cop had a small head, and Gonzaga had a massive head. He was saying that it looked like Mirko couldn't take near as good of a strike as Gonzaga, and it sounded ridiculous at the time . But Gonzaga laid Cro Cop out cold.

hey what's cookin Oz! Glad to see you're alive and well. pretty much if you think about it without offending any races, imo some might of used dairy food or calcium enriched foods in their diets moreso than others, which could of helped somewhat in bone density. but then yet again, even people of the same race still differed physically according to the region they were from. for ex, in africa you have the hutus and the tutsis, with the hutus being in general taller than the tutsis. or scandinavian people having thicker, stronger bone density than their southern cousins the brits or celtic people, who were also for the most part shorter in stature. i think personally it has to do more from what region the person is from than the race. it's been said chinese people don't drink milk much, but yet the mongolian people use milk for alot of things, and even today are known for their toughness and ruggedness as well as being descandents of Genghis Khan. not amir khan:D just my 2 cents

I remember one of the interviews in which Tua said the amount of neck-weights he does in the gym adds up to the less effect he feels when he gets hit

For what it's worth my opinion is this.

There are several factors that need to be in place for a fighter to have a beard.

The first is skull thickness, if the guy's got a thick bone structure in all parts of his head and jaw it means that he's robust. Look at vitaly klitchko his head look's like its made of granite, but even pele reid knocked him out.

Second is the strength of the neck. A big strong, chunky neck, works as a shock absorber; so if it's combined with a strong head id say there's a good chance you're going to be hard to knock out - like mike tyson.

Condition is important, training the body to have a strong neck and leg's, also training the jaw muscle's can help. There was an article in the boxing new's that dispelled the myth "you cant build muscles on you're chin" That said You can train to have a better chin and improve it like ali did [knocked down by cooper and bank's, but took all foremans best shot's]

Last is attitude. The granite jawed tony zale said a glass jaw is just a glass heart. And in some case's i agree. Cus d'amato said anyone can take ONE hard shot if there determined not to go down. Jake la motta said he used a generic form of auto suggestion to develop his chin saying "I cant be hurt" over and over again to himself.

So you're mind is important as well. Then there's awareness, seeing shot's coming' you're defence and getting used to being hit as well.

hypejob haye looks like he has trouble taking shots to his tiny skull. barrett throws those hard looping shots that can land there. don't forget, haye makes himself very small and leans his head forward, a far more susceptible target.

i reckon barrettt might hit the jackpot :yep
