Joe is a moron. The guy is a farce. He stayed in england so long because he was afraid of getting his ass kicked by roy and bernard. Beating on old veterans doesn't prove nothing. Just proves what a fluke he is.

Did you watch the fight on HBO PPV, or did you view it on *******? I paid for it, and viewed it on a television.

Jones was still throwing hard shots in the late rounds, and talking a great deal. Jim Lampley made a comment around the ninth or tenth about how much Jones was talking. The referee told both fighters to stop talking also around this time.

I wanted Jones to win this fight, it's hard for me to not pull for the old guys. Jone's hands were still pretty fast, and I thought Joe may not be able to cope with a fighter with the kind of speed he's never dealt with. I sure thought I could say "I told you so" when Calzaghe slumped to the canvas in round 1. I was still feeling good after round 2. Then a few rounds later, reality set in.

I still never felt like Calzaghe had gone too far. As I mentioned before, Jones was talking a great deal. Not to mention all the posturing Jones was doing himself. Most good fighters have big egos, that's what gives some of them the self confidence to succeed. Jones may not have been what he was 8 years ago, but he was still a good fighter last night. Calzaghe has never dealt with that kind of speed/power mix. Calzaghe was also dropped and hurt in the first round. Calzaghe needed to switch to a mean gear to take over this fight. Calzaghe needed to stay in a mean frame of mind to maintain control. Jones was fighting back til the end. I'm not trying to say all of the mocking was honorable, and that was something for the kids to look up to. I'm just not going to vilify him given the circumstances.

Had the circumstances been a little more like you described them in your post, I might have been more inclined to side with you. I just didn't see it that way.

He proved it.

 

Jones was talking because he wasn't going to allow himself to get shown up in there with Calzaghe doing all of that show-boating. If Calzaghe were to have been all business like he should've been, Jones would've likely been the same.

Talking is different than offering up any resistance, which Jones was clearly not doing. Calzaghe would flurry and beat Jones up while he slumped away, wait for him to recover, all the while laughing in his face, and then go back off on him when he'd slightly recovered. That's basically torturing a fighter that had no resistance. Again, the only reason Jones's mouth was going at times was because he had too much pride to let himself get shown up like that, even though it was clear as day he didn't have it anymore.

 

sweetpea you seem a hell of a lot more agrieved about it than jones . he was very complimentary about calzaghe. i repeat, it was tongue in cheek, joe's always done it and moreover so has jones. a complete non-story .

 

Why would Jones be agrieved about it? What is he going to say?

"I'm clearly a shot fighter and I think it shows a lack of class on Calzaghe's part to beat up on an old man when I clearly didn't have it in the second half of the fight."

Neither have always done it. Jones carried shot fighters like McCallum without show-boating, Calzaghe has been class when finishing off opponents, and never in his entire career fought with the kind of sadistic clowning and torturing antics he put on tonight. Never, and the fact that he was doing it against a clearly shot fighter offering no resistance makes it all the worse. I've spoken to die-hard Calzaghe fans who feel the exact same way.

 

Jones was offering resistance. Not as much as I, or anyone that wanted him to win, would like; but he was still throwing some hard stuff at Joe. You said Jones would have been all business had Calzaghe been, but Jones is the one who started it.

The only thing about last night's fight that made me cringe was Jones not trying to do to Calzaghe what he did to James Toney when Joe was dropping his hands.

I pretty much have to agree with Pea and Tabin here. Joe acted like a douche.

Let us not forget: Jones is shot and has been for a good 5 years now. Those without Jones' sack in their mouths or those not hoping to make a legend out of Joe Calzaghe's record-padding knew this before the fight was fought.

That Calzaghe even signed to make this fight was bad taste enough. Then he basically batters Jones and leaves him with a massive cut which rendered Jones a one eyed fighter. So what does Joe do? Decide to act the clown against a one eyed, shot five years ago fighter.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the little back-door shimmy Joe did against Hopkins, but taunting Jones at this stage of his career is pretty lame.

I know Jones has clowned around with his inferior foes when he was in his prime too, and so perhaps it was a little karma working here, but it's sad to see fallen legends be profaned this way.

BTW, prime Jones vs. prime Joe = 9-3 Jones.

 

No, sport is not about entertaining. Sport is about competition, about proving one is better than somebody else. If it´s entertaining than that´s a nice sideffect but nothing more.
