The title of this post sounds like something Rodney King might say... "can't we all just get along?" BTW, I agree!
And on top of that, it was the Dutch, Spanish and mainly French that beat us in The War of Independence, so it is 1-0 to Britain! Soooorryyy, sorry, sorry, sorry. I'm only playing:smooch
You are missing the point, aren't you Scar? as usual. The thread is a plea to stop all the **** from both sides, that means the American side as well, which gives it out as much if (and I believe they do) not more. Yet you choose to ignore that bit and just use it as another excuse to have a dig at the Brits. **** me! Ever since I first came here there has been a couple of names that have stood out as being absolute cretins! A couple of names that when you come across a stupid, obnoxious, boring, arrogant post without any sign of wit, you immediately know it is going to be one of those two or three posters. Guess what, you are in that tiny group of imbeciles.
I don't see a problem with rivalry at all. Mexico vs PR is an example. Trouble is, we have rivalries with pretty much everyone - Germany, France, Australia, America, Argentina et al.
I think the point is that people (you say Europeans but it can be and is anyone) get frustrated at the ridiculous and ignorant shite that is thrown at Calzaghe by a tiny minority of Americans here. They speak so much **** about him and ultimately it is all lies. They cannot or will not accept that he is a decent boxer, seemingly because his is a forignor to them, so they use any excuse to slag him off. That is what gets on peoples nerves. Interesting criticism and a true and honest critique of the man would be great to read and you will find that many Euros either agree with it or will be happy to enter a friendly debate.
I consider myself above such petty issues. UK is a good country, with good people and good fighters. USA is a good country, with good people and good fighters. International pissing contests do not interest me.
What was your animosity for? Surely it was for something more worthwhile that a British boxer who you didn't rate? If it was for more than that, then surely your animosity should remain and not be hidden just because a Brit boxer who you didn't rate has proved your judgement wrong?
As long as there is no fanboy nonsense or small minded hating, a little rivalry adds a bit of spice. There is a need though, to mutually respect each other's fighters - something both parties have been guilty of failing to do.
No, don't be silly, please. I assure you, no one in Britain is jealous of Americans in any way. Not that there is anything particularly wrong in being an American, it is a wonderful country with great people but there is nothing that America has that Britain doesn't but wants. No, it honestly is nothing to do with jealousy. But what you really, really need to understand is that the word "Yank" is not an offensive one. It is the Americans who have decided it is a derogatory term. "Yank" has always been a friendly term, no different that the way we call people from Newcastle "Geordies". The history behind the word "Yank" is very interesting, you can probably read up on it after Google search. It has nothing to do with North or South Americans either, it was in use way before your civil war. It is interesting to note that Americans also use "limey" as a derogatory term nowadays, when again, that was not the way it was intended. It originated, like "Yank" as a friendly term as most Brits coming into the America had a huge journey where often they would be lacking food (particularly sailors). With no food you have no vitimin C, with no VitC you get scurvey. To make sure they had enough vitC intake they would gorge in Limes. It is as simple as that but for some reason, many Americans (or Yanks) who don't know the reason for the term have presumed it is offensive, so they use it in an offensive way. It's quite funny when you hear an American getting angry with a Brit and calling them a Limey. Anyway, as I said, please please please don't presume that just because a Brit calls you a Yank that we are being agressive or offensive with you, I guarentee that most of the time we are not!
Nationalistic rivalry is kind of funny when on the outside and watching poms and yanks going at it. Also we Aussies call Brits poms.. when it actually means Prisoner of Her Majesty which was the name given to newly arrived convicts to Australia (many of us are descendents of poms). So it is all nonsense. Basically IMHO all the English speaking world is pretty much the same and good friends really, but there is no fun in being too respectful so a few insults traded is harmless. Now the French however... ;-)
I never new the term "Yank" was seen as offensive, you learn something new everyday! As for learning something new, that is one of the main reasons I view this forum. I come here to learn a bit about a sport I know little to nothing about. Quite often threads get derailed by slanging matches, which is a shame.
