Before the fight i was thinking it about his previous fights and how he showed some magic for very, very, very brief spurts. The combo he did on Hanshaw in the 11th, the short right hand against Tito. However i believed if he had any chance of winning he had to turn the clocks back to how he was fighting in Tarver 1.

Yeah i was thinking Joe should definitely win given the position of their current careers and the difference in their most recent opponents. But i heard about Joe struggling to make weight ( probably a false rumour to create more attention). I wanted Roy to win and just felt that he might have been able to turn back the clocks for 20mins or so and get a SD with a few 10-8 rounds and by using the dominance and power he showed in the 5th round of Tarver 3(still a surprise to me now how he pulled that out even after the 2 KO defeats!). He just needed to get two 10-8 rounds and scrape 3 more rounds and it could have been an SD.

I believed all that talk during the 24/7 episodes was true- that he was back.
That he had one of the best training camps and that he had his focus back, his confidence. In an interview someone said if he was in his prime and Jones answered 'Am i in my prime, yeah im in my prime.'
That was something not to take literally, i think all he meant was he was the best he could be right now at this given time.

Then came the fight and the in the first round Calzaghe pressured Jones to the ropes and executed his trademark flurries. But, Jones returned with a little flurry of his own and Joe backed off. Then the fight returned to the centre of the ring. When i saw him floor Calzaghe i was screaming like hell and I believed he had transformed. But when Calzaghe got up Roy seemed in two minds about what to do and the chance(however little it was) had gone.

At the end of the round, it was classic Jones- the bell ringing, Jones in the centre standing strong and still whilst staring down his opponent.
Then when Calzaghe turned it up in the second Jones still looked quite competitive. Standing tall, looking around as if to say- 'Is that it? ', cupping Joe by the neck whilst he was taking Joe's flurry of shots to the body.

We all know how the rest of the fight progressed. Joe taunting with his hands down right in Roy's face and Roy didn't do anything about it. That was a frustrating and sorry sight. Then seeing my hero, the super man i fought was Invincible with blood all gushing down the side of his face and all hope of victory long gone.

However there was a victory in this fight. Jones was able to last the distance with one of the greatest p4p champions right now. A great who will be considered a true fighter along with Jones & Hopkins when he is gone. Jones was able to stay competitive for part of the fight. He was able to briefly put a top pound for pound champion on the canvas and last when all hope had failed- only using one eye and doing the best with what his body had to offer.

I believed he showed heart to finish and to fight. If the cut situation happened in most other fights it would have been stopped. But Roy wanted to continue for himself, his opponent & co promoter and his fans.

There was another thread with some suggesting that Roy showed C class heart. That he should have pulled the triggers to exhaustion and get stopped by Joe. I prefered this sight better to a similar one during Tyson-Lewis with a legend not only knocked down but with nasty cuts and blood running.

Roy can his career on a high. With a victory where it all started for him- his hometown of Pensicola.

 

I meant Dawson now or Tarver in 04.

I know where you coming from Dawg and I felt bad for Jones but I dont equate this with feeling angry with Calzaghe. Joe was in there with a fighter who put him down in round 1. I dont think Joe was attempting to humiliate RJJ. The way I saw it was that Joe was winning the psychological battle in there and continued to do so. It also made me wonder whether Joe was trying to coax RJJ into throwing something of note to open him for a counter.

It was sad to see Jones humiliated but I dont feel any resentment to Calzaghe because of it.

That having been said, I dont like Joe's showboating anyway - regardless of the opponent.

Yep, I felt terrible when I finally realized that Jones simply COULDN'T capitalize on things like Calzaghe sticking his chin out, where a prime Roy would decapitate someone who showboated in that way. It didn't feel good to see this one.

 

We know why Bhop broke it off, and i wouldnt argue that, but the poster was saying Joe should have fought him earlier, and he tried. The ways joe should have went to force it, we in part agree(I remember going over it with you), but when it comes to people saying he should have fought him in then, he tried, it was on, Hop broke it off.

 

RJJ beat ATGs at thier peaks, who has Slappy beaten in his 46 fights, RJJ's resume is light yrs ahead of his nuthugger.

 

The fight shouldn't have happened - Roy should be retired. I felt quite sickened by it all to be honest. Still the £/$ rules.

 

what i cannot stand is Calzaghe acting like he just defeated king kong. he easily outclassed a fighter he was supposed to easily outclass and yet couldn't tko or KO a shot fighter with a below average chin who was able to be hit at will.

 

sure but like we talked about before - no PPV exposure, poor international marketability equals poor international fanbase and not enough financial muscle to make it happen.

it wouldn't have taken more than 2-3 fights to get the interest of the networks since neither jones nor hopkins ruled strong divisions.
