Reminds me of the gunfighters of the old wild west. They're out to make a name for themselves by being the man to knock-off the old over-the-hill quickest draw in the west. I kind of hope that JC does retire. Not that he is afraid of losing, but for all of the other guys to fight amounst themselves to find the new man around that weight. With Dawson,Kessler,Abraham,Taylor,Pavlik,Bute and Froch there's some great fights to be made out there.
Personally, I think they deserve credit for it rather then choosing to hang onto an 0 in their back yards, and making many pointless defences that add up to little. I see no evidence to say Joe is extremely diminished. If Joe would have fought Hopkins when he is the age he is now, or even Jones around about that age give or take a year or two, he would have got huge credit for it. I don't see it as Dawson trying to take advantage, Joe's beat Kessler convincingly, Hopkins, and wiped out a shot Jones in the last year. He is still very much a top live figher. If he retires (which he hasn't yet) then fair enough, but if he fights again I see nothing untoward about Dawson asking for the fight.
They offered? Calzaghe offered to go to America and fight Jones and Hopkins back in the day, as I recall. I didn't know you were so impressed by such things.
Tarver was not a good win. He was shot. Anyone in the Top 10 would have beaten him; even Clinton Woods admitted as much, before the Dawson v. Tarver fight. Johnson was very close; almost had Dawson out on two occasions...Adamek underperformed and had trouble making weight; he still put Dawson on his arse. Overall: good wins? For sure! But so good that Calzaghe should feel he has to prove a point against Dawson? Hell, no!
So Joe really pushed for a Roy Jones fight did he... believe what you want. Whats your point? That you would be more impressed if Dawson didn't offer to fight in Cardiff but instead announced a defence in his back yard against a lesser opponent. Why are you so upset by someone saying that young Dawson has offered to fight the number one man in the division, a top p4p fighter, and somebody saying that they thinks its great - rather then protect his 0 and make a meaningless defence against a lesser opponent. I don't see much wrong in saying that.
Neither of them pushed for it particularly (though Calzaghe pushed for the Hopkins fight, as we know). Neither have Pavlik or Dawson pushed for a Calzaghe fight in anyway more than Calzaghe pushed for the Jones fight. You say Calzaghe 'turned down' Pavlik. How much was the offer? Give us some specifics here. My point is, fighters get respect when they actually do things, not when they mouth off to the media about their willingness to do them. Kessler gets loads of respect from me for fronting up in Calzaghe and Mundine's backyards. Not for talking about doing so. If Dawson ends up fighting in Cardiff, then he'll get respect accordingly. As of now Im not aware that he's even made a firm offer.
Frochs views on on the Jones fight, and a future fight... Froch said: "I don't think Joe will take much credit himself from that fight because he knows he was in there with a finished and washed-up boxer. "Jones in his day was unbeatable but I think Joe will be realistic about it. Who he fought and what he beat in there was 40 per cent of what Jones used to have. "Unless he's stupid and thinks he's beaten a legend and the best fighter in the world, I'm sure he knows what he's done. "He fought an old man who was well past his prime". "Joe knows how I feel about wanting to fight him. "I think it's a big fight for British fans and it'll generate massive revenue, so the money would be there. "But I don't need to say anything to draw him out because if I beat Pascal I'll be the WBC champ and there will be massive fights out there for me. "I'm not in Joe's shadow now and I'm not going to try and pressure him into doing something he doesn't want to at the end of his career. "It's a fight the fans would love but I'm not going to go on and on about it because it's getting boring. "The only person who will regret it if it doesn't happen is Joe. "He'll retire wondering if he could've beaten me and he's not shut my mouth, has he? "I've asked him for the fight. He's had ample opportunities but it's not happened and talking about it is a bit boring now."
Dawson's promoter Gary Shaw said his fighter would be a willing opponent. "If he wants one last fight either at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff or wherever, Chad Dawson is ready, willing and able," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "Joe's a wonderful sport, he's a great fighter - probably the best of his era at his weight "What good would it do for Tiger Woods to take on Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus?" "If you're really the best then you always want to take the best on. Win, lose or draw, Joe is a Hall of Famer inside the ring and outside the ring. "So why not take on Dawson who's the best?" Clinton Woods as a next opponent has been suggested by some parts of the boxing media. If Calzaghe fights again he will get stick for not fighting Dawson. He was given a pass to fight a totally shot to pieces Roy Jones, there is no excuse for another non live opponent.
