After the 1984 Olympics Mark Breland was thought to be the next great boxer. He wasn't and he became the "poster child" for failing in boxing. However he posted a recored of 35-3-1, 25 wins by ko. His three losses were also by ko. He twice won the WBA version of 147 lbs tittle. If he was not so hyped up going into his pro career how would he be viewed?
Many can be called great coming from that 1984 Olympics. He was good not great. I thought he had a chance to win the 154 title too and lost to I believe Vaca who had no business with a title belt. Mark had height, reach, and a good jab. He just did not have the mental strength to stay focus on a game plan. He did well for himself for winning the title twice and I believe he is doing very well after boxing. Sorry, Vaca had a title at 147 not 154.
Mark Brelans stunk. I will never forget after handing him his title in a phony match for the vacant belt, they tried to find carappy guys for him to beat, and they matched him agaisnt a ranked lightweight who still almost knocked his ass down. Then the fat **** lightweight did what he was probably payed to do and quit. Wish I could remember his name. What a disgrace that whole affair was.
mark breland had super high expectations because A) he had an amateur record of like 107-1 B) olympic gold medalist he won a world title.....maybe 2, i cant remember ...one of those guys who burnt out from too many amateur fights
That's the story on Breland. One of the greatest U.S. amateurs ever, I think - but to get that sort of am career, he sacrificed a shot at pro greatness. His pro career record is OK, but nothing that MANY other fighters have not achieved.
