I'm at about 193 pounds in that picture with George Foreman from 1992. I'm a little puffy from my leaner days of 163 to 166 pounds...atsch MRBILL
Through my cousin who worked for the Vegas Hilton hotel. George Foreman was staying there and training in Vegas for his fight with Alex Stewart.... George was happy and jolly.... He wasn't too concerned about Alex Stewart, and it showed in the ring.... George told me that Gerry Cooney hit him the hardest. I scoffed and said: "What about Ron Lyle?" Then George switched up and claimed that Ron Lyle hit him the hardest... George did say he hit Ali harder than he hit Joe Frazier, but Ali wouldn't go down.... MR.BILL:bbb
Even though I've my boxing interest dates back more than 20 years, I only started training boxing when I was 31. I'm 33 today, and train about 2 times a week. So I don't I'm gonna fight in any matches, but I sparr just about every session. I love it. But it pisses my off that's is so hard to stay relaxed and execute the moves well when someone is punching in your direction. Motivates me to keep on trying, though.
Boxed as an amateur. Took the 2 hour drive to Pittsburgh on occasion to get more competition. Years later I was reading an article about Paul Spadafora and his weight issues. The article referenced the name of a guy who was his Nutritionist at the time. I remembered the name and that I had sparred with this kid in high school. He was a good fighter but I got the impression that being Spadafora's nutriotinist was much tougher.
Lol pauls a good friend..he doesnt balloon up as much as before..he use to go up to what looked like 180 between fighting lightweight
Goody may have to move his gym out of that building. He sold the building to the current owner years ago and the rent is skyrocketing. Ain't that a kick in the head. And the damn street that it's on is Petronelli Way. Ain't that a baseball bat to the knees. I'll be heading there later in the month to a see a young prospect that a trainer I'm close with is working with.
I boxed for a year and a half at the Indianapolis PAL Club under the late Champ Chaney. I had no talent. None. Just a teenage kid with a fantasy of being a boxer with no natural gifts other than footspeed and a willingness to take the bus 45 minutes downtown to train. I got to spar on an almost daily basis with Ric Enis, who was the State Heavyweight Champ, for no other reason than he liked to practice cutting the ring off and his footwork. He was the nicest and most gracious athlete I've ever met and was very impressive in the gym, his eventual status as a journeyman notwithstanding. I got to train beside Norman Goins, Marvin Johnson, and Marion Thomas and all were very respectful to a little white kid they didn't have to give the time of day to. Even though my boxing experience got me beat up pretty good most days, I came away with good memories and a lot of respect for boxers and their general kindness and dignity.
Do you have any stories to share re Marvin? He is one of my all-time favourite action fighters and one a helluve of nice and humble man in every interview I have seen of him, how was he in person and did you get a chance to speak with him? Any info would be most appreciated. As for myself and my boxing experience, I trained at the Hilton gym here in Montreal for four years and while I never fought amateur I sparred hundreds if not thousands of rounds with guys who did fight amateur and I got them ready for their fights. Lot of good times and memorys, I`ll never forget Matthew Hilton taking the time to show me how to throw a left hook, christ could that man punch! Too bad he is in abad way right now, his faculties are not all there and his left eye has a droopy eyelid, but with that said he is the most sane member of that ****ed up Hilton clan.
