When Fitzsimmons moved up, he was only out weighed by 18 pounds or so. He lost, near enough, every round of the fight, and caught the champion with a punch in the last round, knocking him out and taking the victory.

When Roy moved up, he was out weighed by 32 pounds. He won 10 rounds of the fight, and the 2 he lost were very close. He dominated the WBA champion, and made him look silly, and even hurt him at one stage (straight right in the 4th)

 

i've never understood the public's love affair with phonies like roy jones and ali. this "dancin'" thing ali did and all the absolute gutter trash smack that jones brought to the ring did nothing positive for boxing and never fooled any
of the the truly knowledgeable boxing people. all roy ever had was hand speed
Look at how many times he clocked david telesco. look at all the wasted rounds ali recorded!!!!! all you dummies can have 'em. they were bad for the [sport] of boxing that it used to be. i couldn't stand roy jones and got sick of
waitin' around for ali to do anything. he should have been disqualified for screwing around instead of fighting. Larry Holmes and Iron Mike could have whipped him anytime. roy jones looked more like a ****** in the ring than a fighter. THEY SUCKED.

He's one of the best fighters of all time.

Obsession with 'glass' jaws.

Obsession with Roy.

I agree with RJJ's cherrypicking, but he did fight Hopkins and James Toney.

 

Truth be told, neither Jones, Calzaghe or Hopkins sought or fought in big high risk mega fights when they were in their prime. Jones beat an out of shape James Toney (who was P4P ranked) at the time in 1994 and never fought anyone that was at the top of their game until Tarver I and most people felt that he lost that fight. It was all down hill for RJ after that.

Calzaghe - spent his entire career defednding the lowly regarded WBO title; never once looking to come to the US to unify the title. Everyone knows that the US is where the best fighters are. Calzaghe staying in Europe to fight is like a top level US Soccer player staying in the US playing for a MLS team and never playing against the best soccer players in Europe. I'll give JC his due for beating Roy badly and for being crafty enough to hang with B-Hop and getting the decision, but IMO he's no legend or ATG. He should have fought his last two fight's seven years ago; that way no one could call his wins over Jones and Hopkins in to question (ala Leonard vs Hagler). Ray never would have beaten a prime Hagler, thus he fought him when he did.

B-Hop spent to many prime years fighting against the boxing system and was penlalized for it by being overlooked so I cut him a little slack. He and Roy should have fought again, but they let ego and $$$ get in the way. To B-Hop's credit, he's the only one in the group that has three wins over top ranked P4P fighters while they were in their prime (Trinidad, DelaHoya and Pavlik).

At the end of the day, none of these guys rank up there with the Tier I ATG's (Ali, Holmes, Hagler, Leonard, Hearns and Duran). Those guy's took the risk and fought other great fighters in their prime save Hagler vs. Leonard. Ray got over on that one, but he still fought a lot of top ranked fighters in their prime.

ATG fighters don't have to have their rep's and records defended by fans because they defined their careers and sealed there legacy for us in the ring against other great fighters of thier era while in their prime.

Jones,Calzaghe and Toney are overrated imo. Jones, because people think he is the second coming in his prime and was literally unbeatable. Calzaghe, because there are too many ? marks over his credentials/resume. Toney, because he did virtually nothing after his fights with Griffin except beat an over the hill Holyfield. We know why the Ruiz win was chalked off.
