We all know the likes of Freddie Roach, Roger Mayweather, May Sr., Buddy McGirt etc. have all fought pro careers and turned into trainers. Which brings me to question which fighters today could be great trainers?

I'd have to say Mayweather Jr. and JMM because they have mastered the tatical aspect of boxing.

What other fighters in the present do you guys think have the potential to become good/great trainers?

Fighters of Mayweather Jr/Marquez caliber generally don't become good trainers, because they don't have the patience. They were so good at what they did that they can't understand why others can't perform at that level and pick things up as fast as they did.

I agree on that point however wouldn't fighters such as Tyson, Roy Jones Jr., Pernall Whitaker, James Toney etc. be worse trainers because they had that one aspect whether it was power, speed, reflexes etc. In that case they couldn't perform as a trainer because they would be teaching a style to a fighter who doesn't posess the same talent they did. Mayweather as does Marquez throughly understand the fundamentals of boxing in terms of hitting and not getting hit and that can be passed upon to another fighter.

If you are a good boxer you will not necessarily become a good trainer. The best trainers were not always good fighters and sometimes totally sucked. You have a different vision of the ring when you're fighting and when you're in the corner. A trainer has also to be a good motivator and tactician, he needs to know his fighter well and get under his skin.

Pernell Whitaker had better fundamentals than Mayweather or Marquez, and I believe he is starting to train a couple of local fighters in his area. Toney also understands the sport as well as anyone.

This really rings a bell, TS.

After Willie Pep quit, he tried being a trainer...briefly.

I was in the 5th St. Gym in Miami and Pep was in the corner of a big, beefy heavyweight.

He was screaming at him from the ring apron -- getting redder and redder in the face. This wasn't stand-up comic Willie; it was Vince Lombardi-Bobby Knight.

When the round ended, Pep went berserk, attacked his fighter -- screaming at him, punching him, whipping him with his pork pie hat, and kicking him in the shins. Three burly corner men had to drag him off.

Pep couldn't get it in his head that what he did as natural as breathing, nobody else could.

Mayweather Jr I cannot imagine training anyone, he just seems far too egotistical and impatient.
Mayweather Sr may be an arrogant *******, but it is obvious that he puts a great deal of work into his fighters, and as long as they are willing to listen he is willing to teach.

Bernard Hopkins I believe would make a fantastic trainer. He has no natural boxing gifts and is an incredible example of dedication to craft and developing skills that do not come naturally.

Glen Johnson I possibly think could be a good trainer. He is good at everything in boxing, and he has fought every different kind of fighter there is. He is always conditioned, always ready to fight. I imagine he could train very well rounded, well conditioned fighters

Sweat Pea has been training Dorin Spivey for a few years, at least he was up until a year ago. Spivey is a mid-levelish fighter, getting older now, but never quite made the top. I'm not sure if he is with anyone else now.

    Naw.

Most of the better trainers weren't great as boxers.

The great boxers seldom became trainers.

Can you imagine seeing Ali or Frazier or Tyson in someone's corner ?

Or Oscar or Tito or Floyd ?

    Can't see it !

"the greatest trainers have the weaket chins"

meaning that the best trainers are not top notch in physical ability's but make up for it with the technical side of th egame. also a a good point is that if a fighter retires early then he has more time to learn how to become a trainer. manny was an amatuer but couldnt go pro, freddie had to retire earlish due to the beating he took. enzo......uhm was a musician and bus conductor.

i think kelvin davis is gonna become a very good fitness instructor
