After being an enthusiatic follower of boxing on the TV over the last few years I have decided to take the plunge and start attending the local boxing club near to where I live. Im 24, 5ft 10" weigh around 150lbs. Please can anyone give me some helpful advice around training, or what I may need when I attend the gym. Thanks
You need a pair on indoor training shoes, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. The gym will most likely provide you with gloves for the first time, so you can try if you like it. If you do, you need bag gloves. Later on you also need a gum shield, sparring gloves, head gear and a protective cup. Oh and have fun btw :good
Thanks!!! If anyone else has any further suggestions this would be greatly appreciated. Im kind of nervous this being my first time going to the gym. Im going with my younger cousin who used to box amateur as a kid, and has just started to go back and train. Im sort of wondering what to expect. Im excited as it something I have always wanted to do, but nervous.
For at least one year I suggest you attend the gym as much as possible. Train hard and listen to what you are told. Maintain good fundamentals like hands up, chin down, jab etc Don't be macho at all. Get in the ring (sparring or competition) and if you lose who gives a ****. After one year you will be in a position to question your training, tweak your style, assess your ability etc
Don't be nervous, we all sucked when we just started. If the gym you're joining is anything like mine, expect a spartan workout and a trainer that basically ignores you the first while. That's completely normal, new people come and go, a trainer wants to know if you're really up to it before investing his time in you. Just show up every training for a long period like achilles said, and very important, shut your mouth and listen to the trainer :good
Cheers lads, some spot on advice. I will make a note of it. Really looking forward to getting there now and just working my socks off. I will let you all know how my first session went. Which should be next Wednesday night. How long does a normal session last for??? Between 1-2 hours?
At my old gym class was 6:30 till 9 At my current gym it's 7 till 9 and I'll even stay after and spar a few round with a buddy. Though basic cardio and form classes Ive seen will be about an hour, without longer than one minute breaks. I suggest warming up with jumprope or stationary bike first. As for handwraps. Slapping your punches would probably be fine without but if you plan to even do half power punches... wear them. You'll be glad you did. Once you workout and your hands get sweaty, they start to get raw between the moisture and impact in your gloves.
I guess I should verify though that those couple hour long classes are fight classes for the boxing team. Classes for anybody and general members are about an hour.
Cheers lads, after speaking to my cousin last night, I am actually going tonight to start, he said for the forst few weeks I will probably be doing circuit training. Then as long as I look interested I will get some proper training. Im like a kid at Xmas
"(I) forgot about the hand wraps" :deal Meaning I forgot to mention that he needs those too. I'm not a soft puncher. If I don't wear hand wraps I'll **** up my wrists and break mid hand bones
