Jones and Hopkins were both relatively green. Hopkins would improve more, however, than Jones did from 1993.

The Toney weight problems are exaggerated, IMO. All the talk at the time was how Toney was much more consistent at 168, how he was performing better at the new weight, and not draining himself like he was at 160 which resulted in some debatable decisions. Then after the Jones loss, there was the weight thing. Toney just isn't the most dedicated of trainers, and the blow-out had more to due with Jones's talent and style than his weight problems. Toney was/is a master counterpuncher and is at his best when guys come forward, where he can pick guys apart and capitalize on their openings. Jones is much faster of foot and didn't stay in one position for Toney to counter effectively. He used the ring so much better than most of Toney's previous opponents, and didn't get sloppy like Nunn did.

Jones won like 11 rounds, maybe all 12, so I wouldn't say it was "relatively close", weight problems or not.

Jones broke a lot of rules and got by a lot on athleticism. He was decent on the inside.

Calzaghe is similar in ways that his athleticism allows him to get away with some un-technical things. Joe squares up quite a bit. His injury-prone hands means he slaps a lot more rather than throwing them with leverage, preferring to throw more arm punches, but mixing in a harder punch at the right time. Calzaghe also has a very good chin, sense of distance, and is pretty head-strong (mentally).

its amazing the people on here burying their heads in the sand . " he must be lying " or " he's got an agenda ". makes me laugh it does. the mans not far off the truth calzaghe is a very special fighter, top 60 or so of all time, which aint bad at all.
and he would have given roy jones a tough fight .

This is correct. The FACTS are Joe Calzaghe gave 2 American legends home advantage and beat them comprehensively. So all that is left for these bitter American fans is "could`ve","should`","would`ve" These phrases are only used by sad losers.

    :D :good

This is a guy who KNOWS what he`s talking about, some of you guys here on the general forum should listen to DiBella, you might learn something.

    Just a few reminders.....

Calzaghe is the best p4p in the world, he`s brilliant, much better than Pacquiao.

Calzaghe is the best post war British fighter, better than Lewis or Hamed.

Calzaghe would have beat Roy Jones in Roy`s prime.

Calzaghe is 1 of the greatest fighters of all time.

My message to the haters - It doesnt matter that you refuse to give Joe credit because he`s getting it from guys that matter more than you ever will.

(Now let the BS begin, c`mon, lets have it, give me a good laugh  )

In all honesty I don't know who would win out of a prime Jones and prime Calzaghe and I would not say Joe is in his prime now. Watch the way Joe punches pre lacy and you would understand. And whilst I haven't seen it in this particular thread, anyone who thinks Joe would get knocked out by Jones when Jones was prime is simply mistaken, watch his earlier fights and you'll see him in some serious wars, getting hit with bombs yet landing 3/4 bombs to each he is hit with, and without even flinching. Even though Calzaghe's chin is still excellent, chin wise and power wise he is not in his prime. Brain wise of course he's going to be better/as good, that's called experience.

I'm a massive fan of both Roy and Joe, and followed Calzaghe way before the Lacy fight. From what I have seen, he has tended to struggle with dirty fighters...the fight with Reid was a close one, much closer than the hopkins fight, but I still think Calzaghe won it. Reid was very dirty in the fight...the first round alone he was warned for twisting Calzaghe's arms, then he grabbed and lifted Calzaghes leg in a clinch, although atleast he actually landed practically as many punches as Calzaghe... Roy wouldn't have done that to Calzaghe, and how would Roy have reacted to the pressure as I really don't see Roy keeping Calzaghe off of him...it would have been a very good fight.

Listen everyone has their opinion and as long at its not totally stupid then it should be respected.

Calzaghe beating a prime Jones is not stupid, it could of very much have happened and i would not have been suprised. Some people here take that as a insult, remember RJJ is only human, he can lose. I know Jones was great but theres no need to look at him through rose tinted glasses.

Although in saying all the above, if a prime JC v prime RJJ did happen, then i would lay my money with RJJ. IMO i think it would have been close.

DiBella wants to secure a fight for Johnson or Taylor so im not surprised he was kissing some serious behind.
