Dawson tries to bait Calzaghe into bout Updated 13.13 Sat Nov 22 2008 Chad Dawson has once again challenged Joe Calzaghe to put off retirement and fight him to decide who is truly the best light-heavyweight in the world. Unbeaten Dawson, the IBF and IBO world champion, is in Las Vegas to watch the Ricky Hatton-Paulie Malignaggi light-welterweight showdown. "Tiger Woods did it in golf and now it's Chad's turn" - Mike Criscio But he is desperate for a box-office clash of his own and claims talks have already opened between the two camps. Having defeated Antonio Tarver to win his belts in October, 26-year-old Dawson challenged Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs) following the Welshman's convincing unanimous decision victory over Roy Jones Jr. Southpaw-style Dawson, who gave up the WBC title he last defended in April against Glen Johnson, maintained he was the true light-heavyweight champion and derided Calzaghe's status as linear champion in the division. Dawson said: "It's definitely a fight that I want, it's something I've wanted since Calzaghe stepped up to light-heavyweight." His manager Mike Criscio said the focus will soon be on his young champion clearing out the old guard in the division. He said: "We want to get rid of the senior tour - Hopkins, Calzaghe, Tarver. Tiger Woods did it in golf and now it's Chad's turn. "It would be a great fight between him and Joe. If Joe beats a young kid then he's the star and if Chad beats him then the legacy is over. "Who else is there to fight? Who can he fight that would be a huge fight? Nobody wants to see him fight someone he's already beaten. They want to see the new up and coming. "And if Chad wins he's the king of kings. If Joe wins he's the best in the division." © Independent Television News Limited 2008. All rights reserved. Everybody wants some Joe $$$ -- Dawson, Froch, Taylor, Hopkins, Kessler, etc. I hope Calzaghe does take this fight. Steve Bunce was saying not even the people in Wales could get interested in Dawson if Joe fought him there, and Bunce may be right. But it's the best fight out there, and Joe would be the draw anyways at home so the promoters (likely Joe himself) could just sell that, and sell the bout being Joe's farewell.
Dawson the same will happen to you as happened to Jeff Lacy, Thats why I dont want them to fight. Dawson is out of his depth fighting an opponent like Joe Calzaghe.
Dawson should fight Kessler or Hopkins, or at least give Glencoffe Johnson a rematch first...then (if he wins) Calzaghe. Dawson needs to win a major fight first, to prove himself.
Joe is the only big money-cow left >160, so everybody wants to fight him. Dawson should stop fighting guys older than his daddy...
dawson should fight guys like kessler, pavlik, bute. not someone hu was a champion wen he was in his nappies
If/when Calzaghe beats Dawson all that will happen is Dawsom will get called overrated, one dimensional etc. especially as his last outing was a controversial victory against a 40 year old with 12 defeats so what's the point...
Horrible post! Everybody who could be considered fighting Calzaghe, should call him out before he retires for good! Dawson is doing the right thing, and he is the most likely opponent for Calzaghe at this point. In fact this a low risk/huge reward fight for Dawson. Big money and legacyfight, and a win would push him in the top 3-4 in the p4p rankings. A loss would not be a disaster, he is still young, and calzaghe is going to retire shortly after, so he would still be the top-dog at 175.
