Vitali Klitschko's return and delusions about fighting Lennox have stirred up a lot of ill will for fans of both sides, and I would just like to say the following:

Lennox Lewis beat Vitali Klit fair and square. Cuts are a hell of a way to loose a fight, but it was LL's punches that caused them. Nor did LL owe Vitali a rematch. The man retired- if he wants to spend time with his family (he had a baby on the way) he certainly has a right to do so. The stuff about him promising a rematch doesn't matter. The man had a right to retire. Lennox Lewis is a great champ and deserves respect.

However, those who try to minimalize what Vitali did in the ring are alos being unfair. The standard line is that LL was old and out of shape. Big heavies mature late, and less than a year before that fight, Emmanuel Steward had an interview in which he was saying that Lennox's best performances were still in him if he chose to stick around. He was at his heaviest, but it is natural for anyone to put on a little weight as they get older, and, as Joe Louis' traner noted, it can increase a heavyweights power. If Lewis was out of shape, then it was his own damned fault.

Lewis is a great champion, Vitali a good one. If Vitali forgets this fantasy and concentrates on Gomez, Haye, Valuev, Chagaev, etc, someone will someday call him great too.

    Peace

Head to head they are even in my book. Lewis won on paper - of course he did, because so are the rules. However, any boxing fan with half a brain know that Vitaly was ahead on points and therefore has to be favoured to have won if the fight continued without any cuts happening.

So, if the question is "who won on paper when they fought?", then the answer has to be 'Lewis'.

If the question is: "who was better when they fought?" then 'Vitaly' must be the most logical answer (apart from perhaps a draw).

There is nothing complicated about it at all. In terms of resume, Lewis has the better resume - at least names, although Vitaly's KO-percentage is outlandish.

So, if Vitaly was winning at the time, who would have won prime for prime? Personally I think they are as dead-even as can be - prime-for-prime.

That is like saying if it wernt for the KO Foreman would be favoured to win if the fight with Ali had continued.

The guy didnt get stopped for a small graze his face had been ripped up and like it or not defense is a part of boxing. Although Vitali was a couple of rounds up he had failed to protect himself adequately and lost by stoppage accordingly.

On Lewis' worst day and Vitali's best Vitali was stopped. No further discussion needed.

I agree, to pick a winner between Lennox and Vitali at their primes is awefully tough. If the cut didnt stop the fight then perhaps Vitali would have powered his way to a UD win. Or perhaps Lennox would have gotten the KO from a slick counter punch anyway. Bottom line we will never know, but at this point a rematch I dont think is good for either man. Lennox is what 43 or 44, and Vitali probably only has a few good years left in him. A win for Lennox would be good and would add a bit to his legacy, but a loss could be physicaly damaging. A win for Vitali may add some to his resume but at this point in time most critics would say he beat an old shell of the great Lewis. A loss for Vitali would be devestating to his career due to the fact that Lewis would be considered an old man (but maybe he wouldnt actually be shot) in a rematch today, and also since he is 37 he doesnt have a lot of time to recover from a loss.

that is pretty innacurate. It wasnt the best day for either of them. Wasnt lewis' worst (the 2 times he was starched are worse) but its biased to call it vitali's best when he only had a 2 weeks notice as well.

Lennox was vitali's best opponet he ever faced, you can say that but that is not the same thing as saying vitali was at his technical peak that night. In fact, Vitali went on to develop more of an uppercut after that fight. Lennox beat him on the inside so there are certainly things he could or have improved upon since that fight.

a win's a win. lennox beat vitali. if it were to happen 10 more times it would happen in the same fashion 9 of those times. even if vitali were to beat lennox now, it wouldnt mean **** because prime for prime (basically) vitali lost. lennox is retired and he's not coming back. let vitali prove himself against haye. there really is no one else to test him at this point.

    Its about statitics and averages.

If Ali and Foreman were to fight 10 times at the time, I think Foreman would win more than half.

Therefore we would have to favor Foreman. That doesn't mean that he would win every time. Similarly, I am not saying that Vitaly would have won necessarily - but given how the fight had gone until then we would have to favor him.
