I understand that some people's boxing knowledge is limited to what they see on Legendary Nights (hence the numerous 'Leonard was scared of Pryor' bull****), but even then, the episode didn't even say that. It said it lead to downward spiral in Taylor's ring performance (he was good but not the same). It showed clips of him getting beat by Espana, and a lesser known fighter. It shows him in 1991 (AFTER the first Chavez fight) speaking about himself and Philly fighters, and his speech is not bad. Somehow to people, that becomes "Taylor was permanently brain-damaged after fighting Chavez"
it was symbolic of why he has brain damage...cuz philly fighters won't box...I don't think leg. nights said he was immediately brain damaged but it obviously had alot to do with it...what is ur point?
Because people claim that Taylor was brain-damaged alone and never any good anymore after the Chavez fight. That is bull****. The episode didn't even say he was brain-damaged ALONE from that fight, yet people still claim that he was. Why? Taylor was still good enough to win a world title a year later, against an undefeated world champ and good fighter himself in Aaron Davis. Just because a fighter isn't the same after a bad beating, doesn't mean he's not still a good fighter.
I think mentally he was never the same but yea that brain damage might have been an accumulation of hits to the dome.
Yeah, Kid Akeem and Robert Quiroga is an example of brain damage in 1 fight. Taylor's pride led him to want to fight Norris which was his true downfall. Taylors mistique was lost when he lost to Chavez. Chavez did not give Taylor brain damage.
People on boards do say it, I've read it numerous times. I don't buy it for one second. He fought Benitez, Kalule, Duran 2x, and Hearns within a 2 year period. He fought Hagler after being inactive for 3 years and never fighting at middleweight. He's supposed to be scared of Pryor? Leonard said what he was "scared of", and I believe him. "I'm afraid they won't pay me enough".
Hearns at Welterweight was much scarier that having Pryor come up. Leonard wasn't afraid of anybody. Duran would have beaten Pryor at 140 or 147 anyway, great as Pryor was.
Taylor was never the same fighter after the Chavez fight:-( maybe he suffered permanent brain damage in that fight maybe he didn't, but he took a frightful beating, and swallowed a lot of his own blood, and had a broken bone in his eye..
I would pick Duran to beat Pryor in a very good fight @ 140. They both had great swarming attacks (and had more to their games than just that), but Duran just had more polish all around.
