I will use James Toney, because he is the best example i can think of.
he started his illustrious career in 1988 at age 20.

he started to peak about 2 fights before he fought for the middleweight title against michael nunn.

so from 1990 - 1994, James toney was at his peak physically and technically. he won fighter of the year in 1991
in his 5th fight in 1994 against jones jr, a drained toney loses a UD in a pretty dull one sided fight, mainly due to the fact jones used his amazing speed was running, and toney was weight drained.

he was no longer at his peak after another loss to griffin, even though he had some good wins until he lost to griffin again. the losses against griffin were very close decisions which could have gone either way, but still it wasnt like the toney of 90-94, he seemed lethargic and unmotivated.

if any of you's watched his 1997 fight with macallum, you would of thought that this guy is 'shot' and he is at the end of his career after 9 years. he had no timing, he was slow and his combos wernt like the toney of 90-94. he won that fight, he lost his next in a good fight against tough and willing drake thadzi.

toney returned to the ring in 1999 and has some good wins showing his old form (washington fight) he had everything he had earlier in his career only with added experience.
he racked up some wins against some good fighters until he met undefeated jason robinson for the IBF cruiserweight eliminator.
he looked as good as ever in this fight and stopped robinson in 7 with a BRUTAL knockout. the thing with toney is he carried his power all the way up to cruiserweight, he had a few brutal one punch knockouts at cruiser. :yep

in his next fight in 2003 he had an AWESOME fight with the hard punching undefeated gold medalist from kazakhstan, the boxer of the olympics in 1996, the IBF cruiserweight champion...Vasilly Jirov.
he had a record of 31 wins, no losses with 27 by KO.
toney was the boss in this fight, he handed jirov his first loss in a thrilling 12 rounder.

within months he fought Evander Holyfield in the Heavyweight division. Holyfield who outweighed toney was the boss in the 1st round, he showed his old form but toney started coming on after round 3 where he handed holyfield his worst beating, in a one sided fight. he looked awesome in this fight. nobody has done that to holyfield before or since. Toney's defense and offense was that of the toney in 90-94. he had added experience though. James Toney made evander holyfield his ***** that night, totally outskilled, outfought and intimidated the warrior. :hat

at this stage he seemed at the top of the world, he was in his prime/peak again since 2002. James Toney again became the fighter of the year (2003). his peak imo lasted until the rydell booker fight where he showed why he is an ATG and one of the best fighters p4p to ever step into the ring. he is the perfect fighter when in shape and motivated (an absolute pleasure to watch when at his best, showing his skill) toney has not found his Peak form since the rydell booker fight.

If Toney wins impressively against the 6'5 former title challenge tony thompson and regains his peak form, that would be awesome. he will be getting his form back after over 4 years and at age 40...we'll see...

Toney peaked twice in his career, i think thats kinda rare especially because of the gap in between ( 8 or 9 years!). LEGEND.

how many other fighters can you think of that peaked more than once, and what was the gap inbetween?

Isnt this a Rare kinda fighter.
    Hopkins comes to mind...

Toney really had one peak, he was just beat by a tricky slickster in Montell Griffin, smack dab in the middle of it. His fans refuse to accept the truth (just like they refuse to accept the Jones beatdown).
