Give me your top 10 ring generals of today, top level operators who instinctively know their way around the squared circle, guys who use intelligence to defeat the opponent; here is my humble offering: 1 - Bernard Hopkins 2 - Ivan Calderon 3 - Juan Manuel Marquez 4 - Winky Wright 5 - Joe Calzaghe 6 - Rafael Marquez 7 - Ruslan Chagaev 8 - Miguel Cotto 9 - Chris John 10 - Joan Guzman I'll admit that it might look very shaky after no.5; maybe a more knowledgable poster could put up a better ten. Opinions?
I wouldnt have Hopkins at number one, just becasue he couldnt find a way to beat an inferior fighter with a similar counter-punching style in Jermain Taylor. No matter how close the fights may have been, or that some would have said Hopkins won, he still lost to a guy he should have beat.
Cool list. Oscar should be on there, Cotto shouldn't. Chagaev is a good shout. Calzaghe should be #2.
James Toney wipes his ass on Sunday Mornings after he gets off the pot, and wipes away more Ring smarts than Bernard Hopkins and Bouie Fisher have COMBINED.
It's tempting to think very technical counter-punchers are also great ring generals, but it might not always be the case. On the other hand, we do tend to underrate the intelligence of very aggressive, come-forward fighters...but that might just be their gameplan. If your best chance of winning is to go all out, guns-blazing, it doesn't make you less sophisticated...it could be that this simple approach is most effective, and should therefore be employed... But yeah...I also think Hopkins is the man, with Calzaghe second. Not sure about No.3 though...I'm not sold on JMM or his brother being such great ring-generals...
How can you have Hopkins no 1 when he has lost 5 times, no doubt a great and intelligent fighter but he wasn't smart enough to beat Taylor and he fought him twice ...controversial or not! His ring smarts didn't help him beat Calzaghe either.
thats a great list, imo though i think that there are fighters at least on par with these fighters as far as intelligence but are just not as effective at this point in time in their careers. i think the veterans, roy jones joel casamayor james toney oscar dela hoya shane mosley marco antonio barrera are all very close to bernard hopkins as far as ring intellegence
Calzaghe's shown suprising adaptability recently but he's been a tactical ****** in the past. Lennox Lewis deserves a mention.
