if youve got a half decent treadmill it should tell you how many calories youve burnt.

Yeah make sure you enter your weight in the machine, atleast the ones Ive seen they let you enter your weight and you will get more accurate estimates for your calories burned. Especially if you are a bigger dude at 230lbs is probably more than whatever they assume if you dont enter in a weight.

I used to spend an hour to 90 minutes twice a day on an exercise bike and it REALLY helped me lose weight quick... I went from 13 stone down to 11 in a couple months

(I am about 10.5 now - so it wasn't just water weight, etc).

...............I read somewhere that it takes 3,500 calories burned to equal a pound of weight. 3,500 calories expended is about what you burn running a marathon. Seems so unfair. :verysad One lousy pound.

Around 3,500 yes. But think that's a whole lb of fat, nothing but fat. That's actually a huge amount when you think about it.

Spread over a week that marathon becomes only 3.7 miles a day. Doesn't sound too bad.

..........Yeah, you're both right, breaking it down somehow does help one's outlook. When I think of a pound of weight lost, I think of a package of hamburger at the grocery store; I imagine what that one-pound pack of fatty beef looks like on the plastic shrink-wrapped platter, and it is a lot.

And RDJ, absolutely, consistency is the key. If you break down the mileage that way it seems less hopeless.

It's a pound of pure lard, which is probably more like a few buckets of hamburgers. This is one pound of fat:

This is 5 pounds. Makes losing a mere 5 pounds sound a bit different, doesn't it?

............Alright, I'll ask. Why is that woman holding a five-pound block of fat, and why does she look so pleased?
