I think Hagler get's allot of respect on these boards overall. In the Classic forum, Hagler is always in the top 5 as a Middleweight, and debates rage as as weather is is 1,2,3 or 4 all time.

I had mentioned before, look who he fought BEFORE he won the belt. Can you imagine going into the lions den(Philly) and fighting top contenders. Contenders that no one wanted any part of. Bad Bennie Briscoe, Boogaloo Watts, Willie the worm,Cyclone Hart. And Marvin did his business in their backyard ! Valdes wanted no part of him, Corro ran world wide ducking him. Only Vito Antuofermo had the spine to defend against him. So what happens? He gets jobbed, Vegas style... Even how he lost his title was debatable. Sound boxing skills, granite chin, fierce warrior mentality. And an almost inhuman training regiment. Sounds like an all time great to me...

    yep agree

Where Hagler gets questioned as a great is usually in these 4 fights, and his quote level of competition at the time of his reign. Have my own views/opinions will post later on them.

    Vito 1
    Duran
    Hearns
    Leonard (of course)

I have my own view on each one

I do need to change my avatar, so as not to be assumed a Hagler nuthuger

I did grow up liking SRL, but also liked Hagler too. I always kept up with his fights. The Duran bout disappointed me a little, but it was nevertheless a win. Marvelous Marvin took on all the best MW bashers of the day and whupped 'em. What else can I say?

Yeah, I think he was the best MW of all-time.

Hagler was the greatest middleweight since Monzon when it comes to resume and quality of opposition. But I'd take Hopkins to beat him H2H. I can't see Hopkins getting involved with Hagler and he'd win a close decision. I just can't see Hagler knocking out Hopkins even in a gruelling affair. While he did have good power, not enough to seriously trouble Hopkins who's chin held up well throughout his career. Hagler IMO would have trouble with a tactically tuned Hopkins.

Watts got a gift in the first fight with Hagler. Watts won probably 2 rounds.

The Marvelous One was special. Seen him fight live many times - from the club shows in the rinky dink arena's in the Brockton area all the way to Madison Square and the bright lights of Vegas. He made it look sooo easy. Underrated boxer, brutal brawler, very good puncher and arguably, the greatest beard in the modern era. If he kept up the same discipline he had with the Hearns fight and prior to that, he could have defended his titles into the early 90's.:smoke :smoke

    Yes I agree!

As a matte a fact my ALL TIME FAVORITE fight is HAGLER vs Hearns.
Man oh Man! That's a monster fight. Never a dull moment from start to finish.

Hagler took a lot of shots from Hearns but DAMN that granite chin of Hagler made the difference.

Not sure about the greatest, but MARVELOUS MARVIN deserves a hell of a lot of respect.

Hagler is my all time favourite middleweight, well one of them anyway.

    Absolute legend.

Ray Leonard beat him fairly though.

lol we are all entitled to our own opinion but alot of people try to blame leonard and forget leonard wasnt the judge despite how he fought. Hagler won that fight in my eyes he is the greatest MW second only to Sugar Ray Robinson
