people age at difrent rates. Allthough most boxers are past their best by age 40. This is a horible idea.
Don't like the idea, Calzaghe at almost 37 can throw over 1000 punches in 12 rounds, so he isn't "that" old is he, but then you get guys like Evander and I just shake my head in disbelief. Maybe length of career should be the yardstick.
I'm not trying to diminsh Calzache's work but doesn't that have something to do with the caliber of fighters he is taking on? Bernard and Roy are not going out there throwing a whole lot of punches. Bernard is still good but he wins because of his defensive skills and counter punching. I notice Calzache is avoiding fighter younger fighters in their prime.
its good that in switzerland there are no boxers of note then....and nor shall there ever be with rules like that. Maybe 40+ would be more reasonable but then even there we have notable exceptions in Hopkins etc.
Calzaghe is over 35. And he gets credit for the Hopkins win because Hopkins is considered by consensus the best fighter (other than Calzaghe himself) in or around his weightclass at this moment in time.
Lacy and Kessler were young and undefeated and at their peak too, Joe only threw 700ish against BH btw. Obviously this year was a $$$$$$ year for Calzaghe, but who is left for him, Dawson should fight Johnson?
Nope, I remember that fight but I don't think anyone considers Kessler a legend or anywhere close. He's a good fighter but I need to see him fight some other notable fighters before I draw any conclusions. Calzache beat Roy and Bernard at the end of their careers. He is a good fighter but I wish he would have come to America 7 or 8 years ago. He's beating up on old men. One old man lost because he has no stamina(Roy Jones) and the second Bernard because Calzache was more active. Calzache basically fought the same fight Jermaine Taylor fought. Throw more punches. It is a solid acheivement to have beaten legends but I don't think it would have happened in their prime. I think we can all agree this is not Hopkins prime. Lacy was a decent fighter.
That is dumb. You only have to look at very obvious examples at the moment. What should be in place is a common sense ruling whereby commissioners appraise bouts accordingly, with the use of plentiful functioning brain cells. This is supposed to be part of their job, but as we've seen with Holyfield as an extreme example they are not doing it and are letting money get in the way. As usual.
