I thought this was a joke thread, and some of you guys are actually saying Buster has the better legacy? Beating Mike was a great win, but Buster did not continue a winning record against top guys to prove the win was because of him and not Mike's weaknesses. Buster was great in that fight and he destroyed Mike, but Joe has 10 times more the legacy. He is undefeated and like it or not he beat Hopkins and Jones this year, and Kessler and Eubank. Buster Douglas isn't even in the top 100 all time and not even in the top 20 top heavyweight ever. Not in my mind. I saw him in May of 1987 quit against Tony Tucker and then quit again against Holyfield in 1990 when he was knocked down and he looked at his gloves and didn't get up. No way is this guy a great legacy. One fight does not make a legacy. One fight did not make Iran Barkley great and it does not make Buster great, although Iran did win 3 titles in his career, one of those at 168 vs. Van Horn who he destroyed.

Why? What exactly has Calzaghe accomplished that he has somehow carved out a legacy for himself?

That night in Japan has become boxing lore. Tyson vs Douglas is as much boxing history as the "Rumble in the Jungle". Why doesn't one fight make a legacy?

There are many fighters had their legacy defined by their great fights, some only had one. Douglas made history. Name me a fight that Calzaghe has done that will stand the test of time. :deal

Buster Douglas beat up the "baddest man on the planet" post to post and then knocked him the **** out, at a time when most boxing experts and fans thought that happening was a probable as pigs flying on the moon.

Douglas may one day make it into the HOF just on that fight alone (maybe).

What have Joe done that compares to that? (Please say Roy Jones so I can **** my pants laughing.:rofl)

The win over Tyson remains one of THE best wins in boxing history. But he has next to nothing else going for him.

Calzaghe has dominance and longevity, but no defining wins anywhere near the level of Tyson.

    I'll give Calzaghe the nod.

And, of course this is all unbiased

  9. Fought TWO elite fighters in their prime (it is possible to fight for as many as fifteen years, have maybe 40-50 fights, and never face a single elite fighter in their prime years).

Had the balls to enter the ring TWICE with elite fighters in their prime (some champions reign more than a decade, have maybe two dozen title fights, and never get matched with a single elite fighter in their prime).

Buster at 29/30 years of age, fought a 24 year old Oliver McCall, a 23 year old Tyson and a 28 year old Holyfield in consecutive fights. Not too shabby ...

  11. Three fights

Wondering just which three consecutive fights would be Joe's toughest career trifecta ...

    Torres Eubank Sobot
    Eubank Sobot Ferreyra
    Sobot Ferreyra Reid
    Reid Thornberry Starie
    Shieka Woodhall Veit
    McIntyre Brewer Jimenez
    Mitchell Mkrtchian Salem
    Ashira Lacy Bika
    Bika Manfredo, Jr. Kessler
Kessler Hopkins (43) Jones, Jr. (39)

Huh, who'd have thought it? Joe's last three fights sure do look like his greatest test (for three fights consecutively) when you examine the list of possibilities (left off some of the weaker combinations for expediency of course).

So, Douglas (30) faced Oliver McCall (24), Mike Tyson (23), & Evander Holyfield (28).

While Calzaghe (35) faced Mikkel Kessler (28), Bernard Hopkins (43), & Roy Jones, Jr. (39).

    Hmm.

The saddest part about this thread is that people are voting against Calzaghe. Say what you want about JC but he is a great fighter with a very good resume and is legitamately undeafeated at that. Whereas Douglas has a great win against a fighter who was clearly not focused and not well trained. Buster Douglas in the grand scheme of things is just a B- level heavyweight and he only gets that high of a rating because of his win against Tyson.

Buster Douglas will always be remember for the first guy to ever to defeat tyson. More people heard about Buster Douglas then Joe Calzaghe. Please remember Douglas was a huge underdog and he pulled one of the greatest upset in boxing history. Joe Calazghe would go down in the books as on the best European fighters to put on the gloves is just his resume looks good but still has a huge ? just for the fact he beat the the guys who he should of fought in their prime instead of waiting at the end of career.
