I understand some boxers begin a 10-12 week training regime and the first couple weeks to a month may involve getting the general fitness up to scratch. Than the exercise activities start to get more specific in relation to the targets they wish to meet as they progress through their Personal Exercise Plan. i.e.- Speed, Strength, Cardiovascular ability etc.. I need some help please. So when boxers start training for a fight, when do they implement sparring into their schedule? From the start? 4weeks in? 2 weeks before fight week? I would really appreciate it if you could provide your knowledge and opinion. Thanks alot!!
Pro boxers can do that because they are already experts at fighting. If you have a fight coming on but no experience that would be a bit different and getting in the ring asap would be priority number one. It guess it depends on who's asking and what his goal is. An amateur needs to spar a few times a week no matter what.
I'm just an amateur and totally unqualified to speak but I think it would depend on fitness level and what the coach wants to work on in sparring. If I was training James Toney for example I would not worry about sparring at all, there's nothing you can teach him anymore anyway. He'd be getting his fat ass in shape until fight night. The only pro on here as far as I know is Mark De Mori. He visits this section every now and then so perhaps he can tell you.
Cool thanks for that. But i mean like, you know when Manny sparred with Amir Khan and his other sparring partnes to prepare himself for Oscar. When do you think he got them into his camp to do that? A couple weeks before fight night? Or much earlier?
Thanks, last question please. How much earlier would you say? 4 weeks before fight week? Thats what i think would be sufficient. In case you were wondering, this is all to do with a martial arts competition i've got and i was just wondering when to start the sparring for it. I really do appreciate your input.
I think it's safe to say you don't possess Manny's skills, if I were you I'd start sparring immediately. What kind of martial arts competition btw, if you don't mind me asking?
Haha yeah i wish i did. He's a monster. It's an ITF Tae Kwon Do competition. Not the one you see in the Olympics as that is all legs. We use hands aswell. I do a bit of boxing also so that helps alot. I'm not a black belt yet but will get there soon(fingers crossed). Most of the people at my TKD club are useless with their hands and even the world class people you see on youtube. They just start flailing them, leaning their head back, square up and start throwing with no composure. Even when the Blackbelts use hand techniques in sparring, they don't look too good. But with all the work i intend to put in, hopefully i'll get a gold medal.
i think sparring is the most important training technique and i think every boxer pro and am should be sparring all the time
i agree to what your saying about james toney and theres nothing more teach him .but every different round of sparring to a boxer be it novice amateur or a world champion he is still learning and never stops learning plus it keeps him sharp and focused, but as for james toney i would deffo having working plenty of H.I.T.S. and plenty of fast hill sprints
