Key moments for me,smashing ian chantler(i think)in 16 seconds with one shot then getting boxed to bits off micheal watson. This did not deter benn, far from it. He went to america & developed his jab & upper body movement. Even with these tools he still loved to pressure his opponent & load up on every shot, outgunning 'the blade' barkley & doug dewitt in their homeland. All you really need too know about our little tyson can be seen in the mclellan fight where neither man was (or ever could be)the same.
Great fighter to watch. Absolute menace in the ring. Not the best but the most frightening man I've seen at 168.
Only a handful of boxers actually scared the **** out of me and Benn was one. Hell of a nice guy though, out of the ring. I have to get a 'The Best of Nigel Benn' DVD sometime. Maybe I'll ask the missus to get me one for Christmas? Any recommendations?
Nigel had the heart of a lion, very brave, tough as nails, gritty and always full on, he came into boxing to late from the Army, if he had 10 more years of training he would have had more tools and could have been unstoppable in his weight class, he could take a licking and keep on ticking.
:-( read this link to see how Enzo says he is better looking than ladies man vinnie jones http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sports...oxing-enzo-steps-into-showbiz-91466-17212766/
Benn was one of the most exciting fighters i've ever had the pleasure to watch, he would always seem in control of a fight, throwing bombs at his opponent before getting caught himself and retreating to the ropes where he would look utterly helpless for about 10 seconds and then start throwing bombs again!
Benn mk1 was a crude, mega puncher with dynamite in his fists and no defence whatsoever. The Benn up at Super Middle was an under-rated master counter puncher who's improvement in form was slightly below that of Hopkins'. He was massively under-rated in this guise and his fluid movement, tenacity and punch picking was exceptional. The Benn that beat Mclellon would have beaten Calzaghe or Jones. IMHO.
Check this vid out mate, awesome stuff.......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TVgkCN_1aE turn the sound on if possible.
Maybe Calzaghe......cos them right hands would have found him all night like he was finding McCllenan Not Roy Jones..........because he was way superior defensively to McCllenan who had zero defence. Jones would have bounced around the ring and outsped Benn and covered up superbly on the ropes like he always did during a Benn assault
I think if Benn landed on Jones it would be lights out for Roy. Benn would be made to look stupid for most of the fight, but would only need one. Roy hardly had a glass jaw, but wasn't iron-chinned.
