From Sky Sports ..... Ricky Hatton is closing in on a showdown with Manny Pacquiao. Golden Boy chief executive Richard Schaefer says talks with both parties are going well - despite Floyd Mayweather Jr's attempts to hijack the deal. Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum says he is hopeful of a deal being made, while Hatton appears happy to take on the Filipino following his stunning win over Oscar De La Hoya earlier this month. And Schaefer is confident the fight will be finalised sooner rather than later - with May 2, 2009, being touted as the date. "I'm encouraged by the way it's going, and I'm talking to the Hattons (on Friday) again," he said. "You really have two of the most popular fighters of their generation fighting each other, and that's the kind of fight we want to make." Following Hatton is known to want a rematch Mayweather Jr, the only man to beat him in 46 professional contests. But with the Pretty Boy retiring after their fight 12 months ago, he is likely to want a tune-up bout before going in with either the Hitman, or Pacquiao. That would pave the way for the pair to face-off in what could be an unofficial eliminator next summer. Hatton has promised to stage one more megafight in Britain before hanging up his gloves, but Schaefer wants to see any match with Pacquiao take place in Las Vegas. "This is a fight with tremendous global appeal, and both of them have built up a very strong following here," he said. "With Manny's following in Asia and Ricky's support in Europe, you could say Las Vegas is the centre of everything."
As usual, GBP talking out of their ass in the last sentence. Why can't this be at a football stadium, or even at MSG?
It should be in the UK, no arguments. But it won't be so we'll just have to take it on the chin and wish Hatton all the best . Can't see me being able to afford to go , again .
I won't be going due to £££. There will be the usual farce with tickets. This is a fight for the people, why not have it where as many as possible can go. GBP/HBO are making some seriously short sighted decisions of late, and it is worrying. Ross Greenburg is a ****ing moron.
its ****ing bizzare isnt it im no expert but anyone can see building a larger fanbase is more important than squeezing every penny out of your next event.
It's for reasons like this that boxing is a minor fringe sport (in most parts of the world) and deserves to be one.
to guys with the biggest fan bases of recent times , two working class heroes so lets the hold the fight in a f**kin 5000 seater casions thousands of miles from either ones home country ****in Goldenboy Jesus between Oscar and f**kin joe calzaghe the boxing fan is getting a kicking !
Here's an idea, crazy as it sounds. What about holding it in one of the fighters home country ? I know this may get laughed at .
Oh I dunno London Manilla Manchester anyone of these places have stadia that hold more than 50 thousand and would sell out in a heartbeat. Instead of a f**king plastic town in the middle of the desert with pishy arenas that hold hardly any people and that the average non US fan would have to spend a fortune getting to. And neither fighter is f**king aremican. This is a joke !
I'm not arsed about paying to get over to Vegas, its getting your hands on one of the tickets for a 20,000 venue where over half the tickets are already spoken for.
I can't believe they are thinking of holding this fight in Vegas......i mean whats the logic in that. To grow the sport having it in England or the Philippines would be monumental. I mean 100,000+ fans at Wembley what an awesome and massive event that would be. Be awesome for boxing, 2 of the biggest supported boxers fighting in one of the most famous stadiums in the world.
