To answer the question, true Calzaghe fans have followed him since before Eubank, I have seen over 25 fights, I know he's been through a bad patch with hand injuries, with his Divorce, with Frank protecting his cash cow, I know Americans are playing cach-up since Lacy, so as a fan I'm really pleased he's finally getting some respect.

I'm so satisfied I don't need much to make me happy anymore, he beat Lacy, he beat Kessler, he got all the belts, confirmed he's one of the elite today, that'll do me. So I don't care about $$$ fights now, Hopkins and Jones are a bonus, when he left 168, that was essentially his career done for me. I know he's 37 soon, if he did lose, fans would completely mock him, putting him back to where he was before Lacy, I would prefer him to get a little, tiny bit of respect as he retires.

He could have openly and publicly chased bigger and better fights than the ones he got. Calzaghe won his WBO title in 1997 - Roy Jones was already lhw champion then. They reigned in adjacent divisions for SIX YEARS, 97-03, and never was a serious attempt made by Team Calzaghe to secure a fight with the world p4p#1 in those 6 years (by comparison, how long did Ricky Hatton fight in the division below the world p4p#1 before he openly and publicly pursued a fight with Mayweather, and got it?? I am not a fan of Hatton, but I admire that attitude - David Haye is also showing this by chasing Vitali. Calzaghe preferred to stay in Cardiff protecting the zero for 9 years from 1997-2006 instead. That I cannot admire or respect).

Also, he took 9 years to unify his division, and his general standard of opposition 1997-2006 was ****ing shocking. Any fighter worth his salt would not have accepted that for the vast majority of his career.

And the Jones decision was the final nail. Despicable.

The general mentality of his fans? That's sort of chucking us all in one boat...and either way it was unnecessary and only served to make your task more difficult in getting genuine responses. You could have just done without that.

Anyway, my take is these are just UK guys that have watched a few fights now he's come into the limelight with his sports personality award. They are a bit over eager without a firm base of knowledge and in a lot of cases nationalistic which adds more fuel to the fire. I don't think its a phenomena in Calzaghe fans, its just that this forum seems to have a huge % of British fans and Calzaghe is a big talking point so it is really highlighted in comparison to fans of other fighters who are equally obtuse and fanatic.

The old saying..."there is none so blind as those that will not see" comes to mind. It's kinda pointless arguing the toss with these people but I admire your determination at times.

not just joe but hatton as well
you could say mexico as well as football is very big over there . take chivas fan for example the are very passionate when it comes to there team. to the point of blows if you insult the team( the one i know and met at least.) every chivas fan i've ever met was a chavez fan. and took to him the same way. it's probally becuse footbal is that country #1 sport they are use to supporting their athletes in that manner which is probally why you notice it in alot of joes fans

Its the fans, they protect cal more :/

  8. Kessler was when most people heard of Calzaghe (admittedly that was only a few months before the Sports Personality - so same point).

I only started watching him from Ashira onwards - but I've seen more of his earlier fights since then. I think it's a case with undefeated fighters - when they're on top, people look for holes, when they're coming up they're a great bandwagon to hold on to. You'll never find the same scrutiny and critism from guys with losses - look at Jones Jr - he took far more stick before Tarver than since.

You have too much time on your hands man, just let it be. Maybe there are casual fans out there who just want to see a guy do well for himself and get some cash in the bank, while also laying the groundwork down for a career in promotion. I for one am sorry to see him go. I loved watching him play Jazz in the ring.

To say "the general mentality" obviously cannot take in every single different person, that's impossible, but I do observe general trends on this board. I think most do. And you know me, I never shirk a spot of confrontation when necessary. I refuse to dilute my opinions!

Noooooooooo how terrible:scaredas: WTF didn't you then

  13. But what is the point of this thread? Do you intend to try breakdown every argument in the hope they'll agree with you? Just because somehting is popular doesnt make it correct - if you convince 90% of the people Calzaghe is a fraud and if he fought a single decent fighter in his prime - he'd have lost handidly. Same at the other end of the scale - you could find that 90% of this board consider him the best ever - they'd still likely be wrong.

Irrespective of reasons - you're probably the individual responsible for most Calzaghe discussions that arent generally to do with his possible next opponent - especially if it's an opportunity to criticise Joe or his fans - I'm not saying you're a hater or anything like that, I'm not a fan of manny - I dont consider myself a Pacman hater.

You're not going to get anything out of this thread, or any other because you'll never accept any answer from his fans - because you're predisposed in your opinions of him - which is entirely up to you. Rise above it and just talk about something else.

You never know, it might be over soon - he may retire...
