Manny Pacquiao has many strengths not yet talked about in this thread, but he has not shown much evidence of carrying his power up from the lower weights.

Manny is an accumulation puncher, who was unable to put away Barrera without the corners intervening. Likewise, Marquez was down four times in their two fights, and Pacquiao could not end the fight. A great finisher, like a Ray Leonard would have sealed the deal.

He didn't seal the deal vs. Duran. Didn't seal the vs. Hagler. My point is, not finishing off great fighters doesn't mean a guy isn't a great finisher. It's a testiment to the other guys greatness actually.

However. that said, neither Pac or calzaghe are real big finishers. A good finisher is someone like Tito who pounced on them when hurt and closed the show. Can't think of anyone right now who does that.

See how smart Joe is, it looks like he beats people so bad, the Ref stops it, when really he was being a nice guy all along. :good

Leonard did not have either Hagler or Duran hurt. You know what I'm talking about when referring to a finisher, yes? When Leonard fought Hearns in their first fight, when they were both in their respective primes, Leonard had Hearns hurt and he sealed the deal. Pacquiao didn't do that against either Barrera or Marquez, and this isn't a criticism, I just don't think Manny can be classed as a "great finisher".

I hear ya. I don't think anyone today qualifies as a great finisher.

I think Pavlik's still a great finisher- one bad fight doesn't change that. He's very calculated when he senses his guy's ready to go, and ruthlessly efficient in breaking them down once they're hurt. If you don't let yourself get hurt in the first place, you're good, but Pavlik doesn't let guys off the hook once he smells blood.

Abraham's a heck of a closer too, it's just that he usually takes his sweet ass time getting there. :D
