Vitali is such an awesome heavyweight, how can people not like him? If it wasn't for vitali that fat slug peter would still be champ!
he's the man imo. His stats are really impressive too. Its a pity he lost 4 years of career. Also its a pity that **** with Byrd happened. bad ****ing luck and a poor decision by Vit and his corner. And his fight against Lewis was epic. Lewis was not at his best, but Vitali sure as hell made him dig deep. Vitali is no Lewis but I believe he would have come close if not for the injuries.
Had he stayed away from kick-boxing and got into the fight game with American fighters when he was 25, with proper management, he would be a top 5 ATG. No 6'8 fighter in the history of the sport had the agility and grit of this guy. And no one has the downright bloodletting meaness. 2" talller than the so called circus freak Carnera,, and with uncanny agility, he reigns supreme. Not immensily talented- but hell bent for leather in the ring- he's a natural gunslinger. You just can't put a finger on this guy: not great one punch power, but takes people out with his accumalative shots, great defense, as well as chin. You have to kill him, to beat him. Let's appreciate this guy while he's till around..
The guy is a great fighter. Much, much better than his brother IMO, and in the opinion of many others. Too bad he's getting up there in age and the injuries did him in for a few years. He hasn't gotten some of the respect he deserves mostly because Lewis decided to retire rather than give him the rematch. He could have been one of the greats had some of those things gone his way, but now I question where he'll be seeing the dreadful division he has infront of him. He has quite a few years of dominance infront of him if he wants to achieve any kind of greatness, and with his age and the fact that his brother is up at the top too, you really wonder what if anything he'll accomplish???
atsch As was so evident in the Byrd fight. The guy is a good heavyweight, but certainly not great. His size is a huge factor in his success, his leaning back style makes him very difficult for most HW's to deal with, they just cant reach him. His movement is not great, his punches are basic....his resume is very poor.
His resume is awful - poor is generous. The TKO loss to Byrd hurts him badly, regardless of how you dress it up. Especially when a guy like Danny Williams suffers a similar injury mid-fight but continues and wins by stoppage.
Vitali could beat any HWT from history, ANY. He has it all the mental toughness, the power, skills, elusiveness, intelligence, "I'm gonna f*** you up" mentality, punch variety, intimidation factor. The only slight flaws appear to be a sometime vulnerability to injury and, in one fight, cuts. A truly great great massively exciting fighter.
I hate that **** where people will dwell in on one fight, one round, and/or one punch. You should look at the entire career. If we just looked at the small things like one punch; Your avatar would be in loads of trouble. A loss is a loss. You just have to prove yourself next time up, and try to learn from your mistakes. Do you think that Lewis's losses are worse than Vitalis? I, personally do, but I don't judge him just by the losses. I judge his entire career.
I like Vitali actually, however my post was badly one-sided. 1. His entire career isn't that impressive in terms of who he has beaten - he has been fairly dominant, but against what exactly? (In the grand scheme of things) 2. Debatable! 3. Correct, a loss is a loss. Vitali didn't avenge the Byrd one (probably not his fault) and I think we all know the story with Lewis. 4. Lewis's losses............ McCall > Byrd, Byrd > Rahman, Lewis > Rahman, Lewis > McCall. The manner of Lennox's losses was shocking, but both were avenged.
very impressive KO's over Hide,Williams,K.Johnson,Peter,Purity. and others...was also ahead vs Byrd and Lewis before injurys.....shortened career because of injury but has the tools to beat a lot of heavys....still injury prone because of so many fights in the amatuers and kick boxing but is a tough guy and smart and has awkward style and power, solid
