The previous posts say it all and besides Mayorga in his prime was a WW so we can't be talking prime Mayorga at 156.

 

If you look at losing efforts by Brits in world title fights.....

Few can be said to have been as lame as Lockett 'fighting' Pavlik. How he actually got his shot is a mystery to me - Boxrec and the IBO aren't perfect rankings, but were certainly much smarter than the WBO, having him in the 30-50 bracket rather than #2.

Danny Williams got destroyed by Klitschko, but at least went out on his shield. I can think of a few more.

You're just going by Boxrec, aren't you? Lockett had a fair dig, but only at domestic level.

He never even liked boxing. He had absolutely no hunger for glory whatsoever, and demonstrated this in his sorry effort against Pavlik.
He may have a good chin, but what's the point if you don't use it? He could have given Pavlik a few competitive rounds, but decided not to.

As for beating Mayorga, you must be joking.

I agree with Flint and Tffp , He fought like a puss, I wanted to see it keep going. He got his shot at the MW title and took knees cause he was getting punched hard.

 

It doesn't show as much in video of the fight, but someone there said Lockett's face was "pizza" by the end of the first. He took knees, but he got up even knowing how badly he was out matched. If he was really wanted to quit, he would have stayed on his stool after the second. Personally, I think he did the best he could considering the mis match. Why hate on him because he was WAY over ranked?

 

Nobody could possibly hate a fighter for simply being over ranked, or over matched.
Lockett gets a hard time simply because the effort he put in against Pavlik was way below what we expect from a genuine world title challenge. His face was not actually that bad, in fact he's been marked up far worse than that in the past.
Taking voluntary knees until his corner saved his blushes is simply not good enough. If he had gritted his teeth and let his fists go, like a proper underdog, then maybe he wouldn't get the **** he does.

Sir, true Pavlik fans bragged neither before nor after Lockett's effort.

Balls to Lockett for coming to try though. Ryan Rhodes IMO was his stiffest opponent before coming to meet the Pavlikator.

So Lockett retired after the match? I was wondering because I buy Boxing Monthly (UK Publicated) and noticed that Lockett had fallen completely off their MW rankings.

Boxing Monthly is fun for me because it is very interesting to see writers perspectives from the other side of the pond on certain things.

I laughed my ass off at a David Haye interview where he was on flat out attack of Enzo Calzaghe, and it had this clip out type pic of David in his truck/suv holding up his finger in the #1 fashion and it was just brilliant. Plus it gives good looks at who the UK up and comers are, and best of all: They BUST Oscar's ass all the time. It was where the famous HBO= Headed By Oscar article from Hausser came from. The one that went in depth about how HBO wastes money and etc..

Only problem, it arrives in USA one month behind when it's released in the UK so some of the news is old, but I still enjoy it.
