Well, obviously, his greatest strength was his punching power. And, like many punchers, his greatest weakness was his chin.
I always liked this combination, may be the reason why i still like watching Wlad Klitschko fights:yep
Earnie Shavers was an awesome right hand puncher. However, he did not fare well when matched against other punchers - Ron Stander, Jerry Quarry and Ron Lyle all KOED Shavers. All three of these fighters were able to absorb his punches and come back with their own heavy punches to stop Shavers. Shavers did have success against fighters like Jimmy Young, Henry Clark, Ken Norton, etc. Shavers did drop Larry Holmes in their heavyweight title fight, though Larry rebounded to stop Shavers via TKO in the 11th rd. hmmm... I don't know, calling Shavers a journeyman is a bit harsh I would say. He was never a true world beater, but he was no journeyman by any means. I would label him contender material if anything. Just my opinion though, take it for what it's worth.
Shavers was an awesome puncher, one of the hardest ever but if he couldn't get you out early he often succumbed to fatigue and was TKOed. I never saw him hurt with a punch until he became tired. He wouldn't get KOed as much as he would just get dog tired and fall with any good punch. If you could weather the storm of punches you could beat Shavers. He nearly killed Ken Norton with a overhand right. For that, he will always be one of my favorite fighters. Calling Shavers a journeyman is an insult of the nth degree and shows no boxing knowledge at all. He was one punch away from a title many times.
Shavers had won around 33 straight (32 by KO) before he fought Quarry. Hell, Quarry could punch and he was tougher than nails. Quarry had 32 KO out of 53 fights. He fought a smart fight against Shavers. Shaver's record puts fighters today and even Tyson to shame. 74 fights with 68 Kos. The Acorn was 33/34 when he fought Holmes. 35 when he fought Cobb. He was 50 when he fought his last fight. He is one of the greatest fighters ever. If he had fought in a softer era like today, he would have been a long term champ.
