How hurt was kessler in the calzaghe fight?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Martini643, Jan 9, 2008.

  1. Joe relies on skill rather than power but his technical punches still hurt, it was a perfect shot to the solar plexus and the ref gave Kessler precious few seconds to recover.

If Kessler wasn't going to get a standing count and Joe wasn't allowed to hit him when he fell forwards what was supposed to happen? Joe use harsh language? Very poor work from the referee.

Kessler took a lot of punches on the face in the mid and late rounds but at that stage in the fight yes, maybe a knockdown in favor of Calzaghe

Kessler was hurt, if Calzaghe had caught with another good body punch he would have had to go down IMO i don't think he would have been stopped though, it was relatively late in the round wasnt it?

Kessler was hurt but he wasn't close to being stopped at that point and its not as if the ref gave him minutes to recover. But, who knows what effect a sustained beating would have had on the rest of the fight.

Like many of you have already said, Kessler said after the fight that he was hurt.

When Joe sank that Body shot into him I could see him cringe and flinch the way fighters do when they are hurt. I think Joe would have swarmed on him had the ref not intervined. Kessler can take one like a champ though I dont think Joe would have stopped him unless he swarmed kessler on the ropes and the referee did a poor stoppage like what happened in Calzaghe vs. Peter Manfredo Jr.

He wasn't that badly hurt, Calslappy outboxes rather than damages. Kessler's a tough kid, he wasn't really in trouble.

    Not really in trouble.

No worse than Calzaghe in the 4th.

Who knows if he would have went down, but he definitely would have took some punishment. Kessler, at the time the ref stepped in to warn Calzaghe, was vulnerable/covering up and getting punched.........had the ref not stepped in I think Kessler would have had his back against the ropes (that's where he was headed anyway) taking a barrage of punches.

or maybe Calzaghe would've opened up and gotten caught cold by a counter.

He was significantly stunned by it, but I was impressed with his composure.

Kessler is open for the right hook to the body.
