What did Calzaghe do to be considered as ATG?

You picked RJJ to beat Calzaghe, and now you're saying he has to beat Glen Johnson, the guy who went life and death 3 times with Clinton Woods and who was beaten by Hopkins, Sheika, Gonzalez and Sven Ottke before he'll be considered a great boxer???

I believe terms such as ATG and elite are horribly overused these days. In my eyes, only the top 50 fighters of all-time deserve the title of true ALL-TIME GREAT. I believe Calzaghe is around the 95th-100th best fighter of all-time, therefore I do not believe he is even close to attaining ATG status. The only way he could do considering his age is to build a time machine, go back to 1997, and go into his world title career with a completely different mentality.

As you can tell judging from the ammount of hate he gets on here from American fans he beat up alot of American champs.

 

He isn't one of the very very best of all time...so not ATG really.

But he is top 100-120.

But to acheive what Calzaghe has is great, i don't know why he gets hate....he hasn't announced retirement yet so theres still a chance he can do more.

Just accept it, he is a fantastic boxer and has a very decent resume. he lacks an true prime ATG on his resume....just like many many other fighters...but Calzaghes still the man. :good

I agree entirely with this. IMHO ATG is the most over-used term in the sport. People routinely throw around "he never beat an all time great in his prime" or similar as a criticism of boxers they don't like. All time greats are so for a reason, because they VERY rarely get beat full stop in their prime.

To be an ATG in my eyes, you have to achieve things which will have you talked about 50 years down the line, things that are unique or almost unique in the sport. People talk about the likes of Barrera, Morales and Marquez(!) as ATGs. In my mind those guys are all greats of their era, which is a very different thing. Only Pacquiao of that group would qualify for ATG status in my eyes.

The only other fighters of my era (1995 onwards) I would class as ATGs are Jones jnr, Hopkins, Mayweather, Holyfield, Pacquiao, Ricardo Lopez (possibly Lennox Lewis as well - I think by necessity the standard has to be lower for a heavyweight since they do not get chance to prove themselves at multiple weight classes). Not a pop at any of the other guys, but I do set the bar for this particular accolade VERY high!

 

Agreed, why Johnson gets so much hype from US fans I'll never know (aside from the fact he KO'd a past-it Jones who half the people over there still think is the P4P King). The guy is a glorified journeyman, when he fought at 168 his resume was a list of losses to anyone who's anyone!

I agree with you that ATG is used a bit easily but what has Ricardo Lopez done that Calzaghe hasn't?

Good post. I would have Jones, Hopkins, Holyfield, Lewis, Mayweather, Pacquiao, and that's all. Lopez's resume rules him out IMO.
