Ring title has become just as lame as the sanctioning body titles if you ask me. I mean it inherit flaw is that it allows for a fighter once he recieves the title, to defend it against whomever he wants, and still be considered "the man" in the division (according to them atleast). They are basically putting the fighters on the honor system as far as choosing credible opponents and placing their magazines reputation on the line in doing so.
Not neccessarily....in 10 years time the Ring belt could mean far more than any other belt anyway, history will record Calzaghe was the best LH at this time.Which belt did Muhammed Ali win to secure his greatness say against Foreman not many people remember, only thing they remember was Foreman was the man and Ali beat the man.
Calzaghe is the linear champion at LH, he "beat" the man; Hopkins and picked up The Ring Title, which probablly has more credibility than the alphabetty's. I think it would be unfair to and not particularly credible to deny that Calzaghe is a two-weight world champion in most peoples eyes. And, I don't like Calzaghe at all, but if you can't give another man credit for his achivements, then your not really a man yourself :deal
Well, of course you're right. Erdei wasn't regarded as 'the man' though. The is where the concept of linear champions becomes slightly derailed. Ignore that for a moment though.. The Ring title, IMO, is at the very least, an equally signifcant title as any of the alphabettys. I suppose, if someone believes otherwise, then fair enough, Calzaghe is a one weight world champion (an undisputed one at that), at least until he beats Dawson...
The idea of The Ring title was good in theory but The Ring were so dumb they messed it up immediately by handing their belt to Roy Jones.
I don't have an opinion either way really, I'm not a fan of Calzaghe, so I don't care what he does. Although, I think it would improve his legacy by beating another top name at LH, but, he has a decent enough legacy as things are, so he will probablly just retire, before he carries on too long and loses his 'o'. I personally would become a fan and gain a lot of respect for him if he carried on a couple more years, as he is really not that old, and tried to unify. I don't see why he is in this rush to retire, given that he is still in good shape, although past prime. I would also say, that there is a already stronger case for him being described as a two weight world champ, than there is against that statement.
LOL Jones was the man then Tarver was then man then Hopkins was the man then Calzaghe beat the man who beat then who beat the man. Dawson has a vacated token belt plus he loss to GJ.
I respect the ring belt but to be a multi weight champion if that's your goal as a boxer u need the wbc, wba, ibf belts that's what the hall of fame considers champions I don't know about the wbo belt but the ring belt don't get u in the books to be considered a champion but what I'm saying is if I wanted to be a multi weight champ I'll go for those 4 alphabet belts
Screw the governing bodies,i agree, but its ludicrous the way the Ring is seen as a sacred cow,the ultimate authority. In the early days of Nat Fleischer, yes fine, but now its just another journal in a multimedia age. Its not even the best mag;Boxing monthly wipes the floor with it.
