Ali on the heavyweights [yt]oaXtFnHS84s[/yt] Jack johnson [yt]SE_XR0UHdaE[/yt] Dempsey and tunney [yt]ru-RtxKmzyo[/yt] Max baer [yt]Z8zja_0frAw[/yt] Joe louis, and ezzard charles [yt]50I4FfhM41o[/yt] Marciano [yt]fJ7U-Kb_4WM[/yt] Round up Haha some funny stuff, ali was great, he makes some interesting points. Who was this cosell was he a boxing expert at all ?, any way ive never seen this before, though i bet many have, so here it is for any one who has not.
Seems ali really liked tunney and also marciano who he says on here was better then joe fraizer, though we all know they hated each other so maybe he only said that to **** him off.
Ali always spoke very positive on Tunney, even when he was at a life stage where he supported separation of white and black folk and didn't seem to be very appreciative of white people. That says a lot about his adoration of Tunney's style, which is close to his.
Yes, that was the thing I noticed way back in the golden 70's when I saw this for the first time on Wide World, that Ali seemed rather impressed by Gene Tunney, though he implied that Tunney would have been rather easy for him since their styles were somewhat similar. Interesting.
Tunney always studied his opponents in detail.....one reason he whipped an older Dempsey so bad. Don't be surprised if Tunney neutralized Ali and it turned into a Ali-Young type fight. Ali in a 8-6-1 decision.
It seems that a bond formed between Ali and Marciano. They were from verry diferent backgrounds but they just clicked.
When Ali dropped the act and spoke in earnest he really had some interesting things to say. Funny how he brought Moore up several times. He really had respect for the well rounded, scientific fighters like Walcott, Charles and Moore. I think he had good points concerning all the fighters he analysed.
Very cool. Tyson did one of these back in the 80s, too. It was interesting because it gave you a glimpse at the encyclopedic knowledge he has of boxing history.
Ali could win these bouts, but even Ali amitts in this footage RIGHT here, it would be no walk in the ball park. Most of these guys would give Ali trouble, problems, and would be struggles to win. Ali could win, but Ali is not going to make these atgs right here look like say Willams or Wepner.
Totally agree with Ali regarding Johnson and Dempsey, boxing sucked so bad back then, just wildly swinging, no technique at all. It's cringe worthy to watch.
Max Baer was crap too, hilarious watching him fight flailing his wild haymakers with his hands down, he would not even be a top 25 fighter in todays division!
I think Baer, like all the other old timers should be given the benefit of a doubt here. If they were miraculously transported to modern times (because in all these hypothetical discussions all things are plausible) then they might very well benefit from more modern day refinements of their techniques. Imagine what a Mayweather Sr. or an Emanuel Steward may have been able to accomplish with a hunk of raw granite such as Baer, or amy of the others for that example. Of course, with Baer, it would have depended on the mental contribution he would have to put forward to benefit from such training.
