But I don't think Wladimir would be able to fight Mercer the way Lewis did. Lewis just went to war with Mercer, a very gutsy move that could've costed him the fight. :good
But this is what Klitschko nuthuggers (not fans, but nuthuggers) are used to. The opponents he looks best against are the ones that stand in front of him looking to eat shots while hoping to get lucky. Corrie Sanders did not do that when he showed up.
By the way, Mercer knocked Damiani the F out. He also fought Lewis in a 16 foot ring. Who's style do you think that suited? Credit Lewis for going toe-to-toe with a very motivated form of Mercer who was virtually indestructible at that point in his career. You wouldn't have seen Holmes pull out the jab-fest result he did against Mercer in a phone booth ring like that.
He did break Damianis nose which lead to Damiani quitting after being well ahead on points, up till that point he had won pretty much every round and made Mercer look awful. Mercer also tired himself out against Ferguson and asked him to literally throw the fight for his purse atsch Like I posted, Mercer was good when he was able to do his thing, just fight like he's in a phone booth. Lennox fought his fight and to me, it looked as though Lennox wanted to prove something, Lewis has major balls AND a very good chin on a focused night.
Mercer was better than you suggest. He was a gold medalist and had very polished skills to go with that teak toughness. He had motivation/consistency issues and never realised his potential. Klitschko reminds me very much of Morrison in many ways. Better jab. But completely unable to fight going backwards. Mercer likely would have made him pay for that, just as he did Tommy Morrison. Just my opinion, and not one that will be swayed. At his best, a prime and focused Mercer is Wlad's worst nightmare. Just like a prime Holmes or Ali would have given Lewis absolute fits. Styles.
I am well aware of some of the crap Mercer pulled to preserve his shot against Bowe and his totally reckless approach to what should have been a great career. It matters not what the cards say. If you're susceptible to an incredibly tough fighter with good handspeed and power (and durability galore), and he catches up to you (as he did unbeaten versions of Damiani and Morrison) it is game over. Lewis had no choice but to fight Mercer's fight. 16 feet. Think about that with two HW's weighing a total of 485 lbs. :yep
Least I watched them all live - at the Olympics, no less - and don't glean my "knowledge" from Boxrec.
Kimbo submitted Mercer with a leg lock I believe. Hardly more brutal than the savage beating Wlad gave him.
I don't know about that, Wlad's jab & power was the difference in their fight & Mercer's defense wasn't much better in his younger days. He was more aggressive but I don't think he'd get past that jab either way. Wlad is at his peak now BTW, imagine the beating he would give Mercer in this form.
Again, I disagree. I think Lewis only had problems because he had a tendency to brawl with opponents when he could easily outbox them.
Yes but the fact you have to post something like that suggests you think it's in some way relevent. If I were a Danny Williams nut-hugger I could claim he beat Tyson quicker than anyone else too - looks good on boxrec but if you follow the sport you'll know it's meaningless. The prime version of Mercer would have been a totally different prospect for WALDO.
