Yeah, Pavlik applied relentless physical pressure...after being knocked down in the first fight and after trailing on points in the second. That requires serious mental toughness. The 2nd and 3rd round in their first fight show all the difference between a mentally weak fighter, who could not capitalize on his advantage and a mentally strong fighter, who shakes off a knockdown and wins the next round. Kessler fought Calzaghe with as much pressure behind a jab as Calzaghe ever encountered and despite trailing, Kessler never gave up and followed his gameplan. Similarities are there IMO. Also, why don't you address the fact that Taylor unerperformed several times in his career? His extra bag of tricks, where was it in some of his big fights when he really needed to prove himself?
Again, never did I say that Taylor is a massive puncher... only that he's got enough pop to give Kessler problems... especially when Mikkel doesn't see those shots coming.
Maybe but Kessler's first fight WAS ten years ago. You think he was dominant from his first fight ? As Maxime already pointed out, Kessler became relevant in this division when he won the WBA title from Manny Siaca. Saying he's been dominant for ten years is a big over statement.
I think we see a stronger Taylor at 168. Lacy was a good comeback fight. I'd like to see him in at least two more fights at 168 before Kessler. Taylor does need to learn to step into his punch a little more, but we saw Joe get away with 'meaningless' scoring flurries.
What do you expect? One fighter has largely disappointed fans with his performances over the last four years, the other has looked fairly dominant on all but one occasion. Most people are choosing to overlook is that both fighters' lackluster performances have all come against top competition; the first guy (Taylor) has just faced a lot more of it, and more consistently, than the second (Kessler). Also, most fans look at Kessler and see a European version of Pavlik (better even, by many accounts)... a comparison I don't completely understand or agree with.
