Today I was at an amateur boxing show, and Bert Cooper was there (along with Howard Davis Jr. and Curtis Parker), and as he was giving out a trophy to a winner, the announcer said that if he passes one more test, he will be allowed to make his comeback. Bert seemed excited about it. If this is true, I hope he fails the test.
He was always exciting but he couldn't win at the top when he was young and in his physical prime. Now he's old.
Berton Cooper is pushing age 44...... His peak weight was around 210 to 215 pounds as a heavyweight..... Last I saw Cooper, he was a fleshy 245 + pounds and looking like a slob...... The Coop has ZERO chance of doing anything notable in boxing at this juncture...... MR.BILL
Last time Bert impresed me was against Cecil Coffee on a DKP show.. he threw a short uppercut that broke Cecils nose ... He was a very Ill man , couldn't say no to putting that white **** in his nose like Vince Phillips and Kennedy Mckinney......
I remember that performance. It was shortly after the Holyfield fight, and I belive it was aired on either HBO or showtime championship boxing, but can't remember which. It was probably one of the last real good performances by Cooper.. Although he did give Moorer one hell of a battle later that spring.
Bert Cooper looked in GREAT shape at about 210 pounds for Riddick Bowe in 1990, but it didn't mean Jack...... The Coop was dusted by a series of Bowe right hands in round 2........ After that, the weight began to pile on Coop's frame....... I lost track after Coop fought and lost to both "Holy & Moorer" in the early 1990s...... Cheers....... MR.BILL
If he's fit enough to fight, let him fight. He knows the risks and he's just trying to earn a living. Man has a right to earn a living.
If we had a heavyweight champion that demanded to fight the best, I'd be willing to bet Cooper would never get a shot. Since we don't have any such champion, I'll keep my money in my pocket on this one. If you go to BoxRec, they currently have 1087 heavyweights ranked. I'm sure Cooper can put some sort of win streak together if he picks the right opponents. Then he just needs a fight with James Toney, and win or lose, he should get a title shot.
All we need now is for Michael Moorer to make a comeback & we could have another slugfest to will be talked about for years after lol! Only in Boxing!
He may win a couple of fights in the pitifull heavyweight division but nothing significant. He should let sleeping dogs lie and stay retired before he ends up like greg page.
Bert Probably can not even Smolder these days ! If you enjoyed Frazier - Jumbo Cummings then this might be for you !?
