If Roy Jones had retired after Ruiz, would he have been a top 10 ATG?

He beat some good fighters. Not many ATG fighters though and really. Boxing since the introduction of 4 titles at each weight has done little to confirm who was best. Jones never boxed out side of America against rival champions and this multi weight rubish is boring. Undisputed counts with longevity. Joe Calzaghe for instance. the man got ktfo by no bodies. No excuse he made a decision to fight and got knocked out by people the world knows nothing about. A massively gifted fighter but in reality once he had to take a shot he was ****ed. Not comparable with Leonard or Robinson or Ali. He was gifted. Just lucky I guess but could not activate a plan b. He was happy with brawlers on the bum a month club but he had a suspect beard

Roy never beat a unified, linear, or undisputed Champion in his career. No way could he have been a top 5 or even 25 ATG.

Beating Ruiz proved nothing. Hell James Toney did the exact same thing.

Ruiz is the ONLY Heavyweight beltholder to lose to not one but 2 former Middleweights. That is disgraceful and shows what a joke Ruiz was.

Are you going to try and tell me that Jones and Toney are the only 2 fighters that could have moved up and beat Ruiz? Several Light Heavyweights or Cruiserweights could have bulked up and beat Ruiz the guy has no skill at all.

i think even with him prolonging his career, you can make an argument for top 20 or 30 atg, but even if he retired when he should no, he'd never be a top 10

Jones had top 10 ATG ability, no doubt. There never has been and there never will be anyone in the world of boxing like him again. But a really good resume would've been needed to put him anywhere near the top 10. While he has a very good resume it's not at the calibur of a Leonard or Ali.

Agreed. If he retired then, no way is he top 10, but Roy had the natural talent to become a top 10-20 had he only dared to be great.

Maybe that's how it should be, but we both know that's not how it is. Look at Tito Trinidad. A few late losses in his career and now he's laughed at and picked to lose H2H against guys like Margarito. Roy Jones was viewed as a living legend and a marvel and now people say that he would've lost to Calzaghe in his prime.

    Obviusly those people have agendas.
    Trinidad is still a legend
    Jones the same
Even if Jones losses to Sheika and Tito losses to whoever he fights next it won't change they're legend status.

I agree, when RJJ was in the ring and at his best he could have beaten anyone, he might not be ranked in the top 10 all time great fighters. but at his best he would beat any of the so called ATG and it would be a boxing lesson that could be admired for generations. :happy:happy

Roy Jones reminds me of this lad who always used to run faster than me always came in ahead of me on 5 mile runs. Was he fitter yes did he train no did I yes. he was just gifted with this fitness. Jones was gifted with reflexes and ability. Soon as they went away he got found out. Ali had a plan b Leonard had a plan b all the greats had a plan b

    NO. Just no.

His resume is noway near deep enough. Not by a long long way.
