I never saw this Norwegian heavyweight in action. Steffen Tangstad's career stretched from 1980 to 1986. Along the way, he managed to compile a pro record of 24-2-2-14, and became the EBU champion on at least two separate occasions. His signature wins included victories over Joe Bugner, Alfredo Evangelista, Lucien Rodriguez and a draw with a young Buster Douglas. He was probably best known for his only try at a world title fight with Michael Spinks in 1986, a bout which lasted 4 rounds, and would be the last appearance of Tangstad's career. Anyone ever see his fight with Spinks, or have anything to add about him?
I have seen the Spinks -Tangstad fight....Tyson- Ratliff was on the undercard rather onesided with Tangstad trying to do a Ingemar on spinks... but that never happened ofcourse....i had Spinks winning all the 3 rounds
I've seen the Spinks-Tangstad fight & it was boring as hell. Tangstad is no better than JOE HIPP (in fact, Hipp had a much better chin)... I remember seeing the HBO build-up for the fight & apparently boxing was illegal in Norway which forced Tangstad to train in the USA. Tangstad didn't belong in the same ring as spinks (in the same way as Kevin Rooney didn't belong in the same ring with Alexis Arguello)
He wasn´t that good, the fighter I have in my avatar, Guido Trane, was robbed in Denmark for example, the D against Douglas was also a bit lucky because of the point deductions, his best wins over an old Evangelist and over and even older Bugner don´t count that much, he was a fighter only on the European level...
My only memory of Spinks/Tangstad was with Mike having him pinned on the ropes, and letting fly with a left hook to put him down. The intrique behind this one was the fact that Spinks was still thought of as a puffed up lightheavyweight, so everytime he stepped into the ring with a true heavyweight was thought to be something of a crapshoot. Spinks's performance proved for the first time that he carried knockout power as a heavyweight.
Guido Train ( LOL ) I always wondered if I was the only person to know of that name. I've never seen him fight but ran into his name on boxrec a few times. So that's his picture in your avator? I'm thinking of changing my name to Guido Train
He was a relatively good fighter on European level, he had good power and a pretty solid chin, but he didn´t train, boxing was only a hobby, not his job (like so many Italians now), he showed a good fight against Foreman, where he was stopped because of cuts...
He was shocking, reading an old Boxing News, Bugner was robbed blind, then he beat the awful Lucien Rodriguez, and blew the Eklund fight just when people were starting to take notice of him. If taking forever to beat Johnny Westgarth (a true honest pro, but hardly world class) was good enough to get you a shot at the Heavyweight Championship of the World, 20% of all Heavyweights who have ever fought would of deserved a shot. Spinks showed him up for what he was, a mediocre actor.
A man who's name is Trane, didn't train? That's kind of funny. Seriously though, I wasn't very familiar with too many Euro heavyweights from the 80's other than Bruno, Mason, Damiani Tangstad, Ecklund and a few others. I remember in 1989, I saw Tim Witherspoon lay out Anders Ecklund in one round. That was one of the worst knockouts I had ever seen. Ecklund was out.
Yeah,i Remember Trane.he Was A Decent Honest European . Just Alittle Short Of Top Euro Class But A Fair Pro,all The Same
He might not have been a great boxer but atleast he has spend his money well. He is a very successfull businessman in scandinavia now. He has been involved in some fight promoting I think.
